Yesterday was "Free Day"--a familiar concept to all Body-for-Lifers. I've been working out hard all week and eating right, but Friday is my end-of-week time to get ready for the weekend. No real exercise (except a walk), and no food rules. I had an absolutely GREAT chicken sandwich from the co-op; I added some of their chick-pea spread to it and that made it even better. After work I stopped at the Elks and had a drink (only one, but, as my Dad always said, "if you're only going to have one drink, don't be a fool--make it a double!) with some pretzels. I had the last half of the sandwich for dinner later.
I was sure that I was going to be up a couple of pounds this morning just from the carbs. But when I hopped on the scale this morning, I weighed 161.5--down from 164 yesterday!! I've dropped 4 pounds this week.
I'm not worried about the quick weight loss--I was pretty bloated when I decided to get serious about this again, and the first 6 days are always good for morale. It's the next 6 months that actually count! But I can DO this--I've been fat too long and this is my year!
I went to the gym after lunch and then I took a nap. After the nap I went shopping at Winco and that was truly an adventure. I swear everyone was hungover or something: the checkstands were slow but there were lots of people in the store wandering aimlessly, parking their carts where ever (even sideways in the aisles!), and generally acting like they were not all there. What should have been a one-hour chore turned into a two-hour expedition.
Every year after Christmas my husband and I make fruitcake for the next year's Christmas; we also make some of it into energy bars for camping. The purpose of the shopping trip was to get all the stuff. Since my fruitcake recipe is really old (circa 1900), all the ingredients are listed in pounds--the best way to get the ingredients is in a bulk food store. I think this fruitcake is extra good (nothing like the store-bought cake)--it's full of real fruit with just enough flour and sugar and eggs to hold the fruit together. This year we'll build it with raisins, dates, figs, dried cherries, dried cranberries, and dried blueberries; citron is the only candied fruit I use. Strong coffee and orange juice is the only liquid in the batter. After the cake is baked, we "baste" it every couple of weeks with brandy. The alcohol evaporates, but it does keep the cake from spoiling. I may actually calculate the calories per oz this year--it should be scarey!
I took my byetta late this afternoon after I'd eaten a bit. I had a cup of coffee right after a took my byetta and so far I haven't had any headache. I ate an hour after the byetta. I feel a little jittery right now (an hour after I ate), because my blood sugar is only 69. I'll have a backcountry bar and see if that fixes it.
I ate a backcountry bar and I feel better. My blood sugar is still 69-70 by finger stick, but that is probably behind where my real blood sugar is. At least my stomach isn't upset and I don't have a headache--at least not yet.
It's 8:30 and I'm getting sleepy since this is my normal bedtime. I think I'm going to hit the sack.
