I finished! Official time is 5:29:55.8!!!!
I had the best trip. My brother and sister in law were awesome. My sister in law Kristi drove the race course with me the day before. It was a great idea because we knew the best spots for my brother Mark and Kristi and the kids to be for race support.
Mark met at mile 10, 14, 15 and 19 (switching out my fuel bottles and giving me my gu packets) and of course 26.2. My daughers, Kristi and her 2 daughters were at mile 14 and 19 and the finish.
The race was smaller about 4,500 1/2 and full marathoners. the marathoners started at a different loaction than the half marathoners. The Course overall was nice and the weather was perfect. Cloudy for about 3 hours and then when the sun came out there was a lot of shade.
If felt pretty good until Mile 18. At 18 I had to just space out and dig deep. There was big hill at mile 23 that I had to power walk but that was OK. I was able to walk in a certain way to stretch out my calfs and feet - I started having bad cramping issues starting at mile 21ish. There was no way I was going to stop moving because I was worried I would not be able to start again.
Right after I crossed the finish line (with my arms up in the air
) and stopped I could not walk and was about to fall. My legs totally cramped up (it was like having labor pains in my calfs and feet). 2 medics caught me (they were fast!) and had to escort me to the medical tent. They cello wrapped my legs with ice and then I had to walk around with family members on either side of me for about 30 minutes.
Once I was able to walk without help we broke up the drive home. We drop 30 minutes and then I got out and walked around and stood in the ocean for a natural ice bath
It was fun. I was standing there watching the surfers and the kids play in the waves.
The second half of the drive home got worse. I got sick to my stomach and then my teeth started to chatter. I knew I needed to eat more but nothing sounded good. Kristi made me a piece of toast and I told her it was the best piece of toast I ever had. I got in the shower and after I was clean with warm clothes and I got more nutrition I felt much better.
I was a little worried about my plane ride home yesterday but yesterday I felt pretty good. I biggest issue are my calfs - super sore.
Overall it was a very good experience. It does feel strange....I do not have to run the next couple of weeks. I am just going to cross train. I almost feel lost without my training plan.
I am going to meet with my running coach and get a post marathon training plan going so I don't loose the fitness I have right now. My next goal will be to do the St. Louis Go 1/2 marathon this spring, with a goal to PR. Now I am going to focus on normal workouts and my nutrition to get off these last 40 pounds! Today I am off to a good start!
