focus tips when there's lots to lose

Thought it'd be nice to share our ideas on how to stay focused. With all of us needing to lose over 100 lbs - and knowing that this transformation will take time - how do you stay focused on the end goal?
For me - it's been not how long it takes - on my weekly weigh ins - if I stay the same - that's OK - maintain or lose - that my plan... but it's like a little celebration when I moved down to start the next 10 lbs! I'm taking it 10 lbs at a time!

Some of the tools on CK helps me to stay focus. I frequent the motivational tool. A constant reminder of why I am doing this is very helpful. Also I am sick and tire of being unable to do simple things without being in so much pain. I would like to be able to go out and work my garden without people looking at me like I do not belong:look:...because I keep having to sit down to take a break.

Taina
I can do this...I know I can. It's just going to take time & patience.

"Focus" is a great choice of words, Debra, because that IS my main tip.

Focus.

The task of losing 100+ pounds can seem just too overwhelming. Even at a healthy 1 or 2 pounds a week, that's a year! My mind just can't handle that. I keep dropping into self-pity mode, "I'm doing all this exercise and counting every bite for a *year*!?" The idea just crushes me.

So, I don't think of it that way. I focus on today. TODAY I am going to eat healthy, and only 1500 calories. TODAY I am going to try than new exercise.

Sometimes I narrow the focus even more. "Okay right now I do not really want that [food I shouldn't be eating]. So I'm not going to eat it right now. An hour down the road might be another story but RIGHT NOW I can control the urge. Focus.

If the big picture is too overwhelming to look at, I just refuse to do so. However, I can manage today.

(and of course the secret is that all the "todays" add up, but ssshhhh, don't tell that to my subconscious)

Good points Toni - I have to do the same thing.

I did really well at one time, - lost over 150 lbs, but then lost my mojo and gained almost 100 back. I'm not giving up... just need to keep working on getting back on track. And I'm hoping the reminiscing here about what I did right then, will help me get back to doing things right.

I used to keep my focus on the here and now. When I exercised, I didn't think as much about how much I needed to exercise, etc. as I did focusing on doing better than the last time. If last time I did 30 minutes on the treadmill at 3 mph, then this time I'd focus on doing another 10 minutes OR another .25 mph. And my eating was focused on being healthy ... counting protein, fiber, fat, etc. AND my bottom line with the scale was to just have it be better than the last week I stepped on it.

I'm glad all of you are here. We should be good for each other -- encouraging and motivating.

Iím trying to stay focused on better mobility and agility and an overall improvement in my health. My mom and dad both underwent surgery to replace major joints in the body during the last year. I can see that same procedure in my future, but at a much earlier point than either one of them had to face. It seems that I physically and mentally jumped a stage of my life and went straight from youth to old age.

Iím back in it, not to win it, but to change the ending!!

Leslie, I know *exactly* what you mean about losing years to the obesity. I got reeeeeally lucky (knock on wood) in that I got busy losing weight before I blew out a knee or hip or something. I lived in fear of that; at 390 pounds I was probably one fall away from permanent disability.

I can offer you some hope: I'm 53. I started losing weight about 2 years ago. I now feel better than I have in decades. That's no exaggeration. I can do things physically that I couldn't do in my *twenties*. My hair color is still grey, but I have absolutely turned back the clock in many senses.

It's not too late for you. Believe it. You can do it.

Leslie- I can totally relate to your last post. I've always had the mindset that I was young and "had plenty of time" to lose the weight. I'm now 35 and realizing that I'm not getting any younger. Plus, I feel like my body is falling apart. The good news is that we can turn this thing around and make a huge impact on our future health. It's pretty exciting when you think about it. Our bodies are so forgiving and resilient. It's so great that you've made a commitment to bettering your health. Best of luck!

Toni- You're a real inspiration! It's so good to hear that losing the weight makes such a huge impact.

Elizabeth - you're 35!?! You young pup!!

I can't tell you how much I WISH I'd started this when I was 35. I confess, I'm envious. You're going to be fine.

Yep, I'm 35. I have alot of regrets about the way I've let my obesity hold me back. Haven't dated much, no kids and stuck in a job I just don't like. Sometimes I feel like life has completely left me in the dust. I settled in alot of aspects of my life because I didn't have the self confidence and motivation to push myself. I know it's a problem, but I don't know how to fix it. I'm just trying to do the best I can to remedy some of the damage I've done. I think I'm slowly discovering new things about myself as the weight comes off. The key is to stay the course.

I was 48 when I lost so much weight, and Toni is right, I felt better than I had in decades! Now my plan is to get back to that point again.

We can, scratch that! We WILL do this! :y: :cool1:

i have shirts i want to wear
to get to where i can tie my work apron around me without adding
extra length to the ties...
get in my car and my belly not hit the steering wheel

i have no idea at what weight these things will happen
but, i'm working towards them everyday!

That's the million dollar question, for sure! I am really struggling with that myself. Sometimes I find it motivating to review the Motivational Tool. Have you done the motivational tool yet?

Good idea Dee. Yes, I did fill out the Motivation Tool when I first joined up CK, but I haven't visited it recently. I'm definitely weak in that area. Motivation? Uhm, sure. I just can't articulate what this weight-loss/health journey is about for me. The lack of clear vision here is probably related to my struggles staying focused.

Sure wish I could figure this part out.

Sydney, have you ever put on an old big pair of pants... and had them fall off your hips??

I still have my biggest pair of jeans -- and I never want to get that big again. I just posted a pic of me in them in my blog. I wasn't at my lowest yet, but was well on my way. Sure wish I knew what went wrong. I SO need to get on that downward trend again.

I'm not sure I still have my biggest pair of pants... might be around somewhere.
I DO have the first T-shirt I wore at the gym; a man's 5X. Fun to put on, but not as dramatic as a pair of pants.

That's a great photo of you on your blog, Dee. Is there any way to make it larger? How does one post pics on blogs, anyway? I didn't see any option for that. I'm not totally without computer skills, but I feel like a clutz around here. Lots still to learn.

In CK and in life in general, I'm afraid.

Oh I think a 5x t-shirt would be just as good. Take it and hold it in front of you -- so that you can see your shoulders or some part of you to show your current size and have the t-shirt stretched out in front of you to show the difference. I'll be it'd be pretty dramatic.

As for the photo, I had to make it smaller in order for CK to upload it. I'm not sure how big of a picture it will upload.

When you say, "In CK and in life in general, I'm afraid." are you referring to the talks in the PAW thread for this week, or something else?
