New to CK but not diabetes

Hi, I'm new to CK but not diabetes. I was diagnosed back in 2006 and so far I've used metformin to control my blood sugar. Lately my blood sugar levels have been all over the place and it's motivated me to get back to eating better. My doctor has suggested carb counting but I'm not very familiar with it so I joined CK to help me with that. Does anyone have any tips on using CK to steady my blood sugar?

I also work full-time where co-workers bring goodies all the time. I also need some tips to resist the goodies and co-workers who bring the goodies.

My first goal is to lose 10% of my body weight. I need to do something now so I can hopefully stop or lessen the complications of diabetes of which I'm beginning to experience.

Hey could you explain in more detail about the "1/2 the fiber above 5 grams" ? Thankyou! Jo

Susan - counting carbs on CK is easy. Select your food in the diary and the carbs are counted for you! As a diabetic your physican should have a recommended carb level for you? That's where you need to begin. I'm allowed 12 carb servings (1 serving = 15g of carbs) a total of 180 grams of carbs per day. I don't have to eat all of them but can't go below 8 servings a day. To keep my BS level I spread out my carbs 1 upon rising, 2 mid-morning, 2-3 for lunch, 1 afternoon snack, 2-3 for dinner and sometimes 1 pre-bed. I try to keep to between 9 - 11 carb servings. (Note: a carb serving is total carbs - 1/2 the fiber ABOVE 5 grams.) Good reference sites are Web MD and the Mayo Clinic - search for Diabetes.

As for the worker goodies - I made a personal rule - only eat what I bring to work. No exceptions. Nothing tastes as good as keeping my toes - eye site - and kidneys!

Good Luck!
