I hear you, Mary.

I recently read an article on exercise in Oprah magazine. I think it was the August issue. Anyway, the gist of the article was that new studies show that short bursts of intense exercise in between slower intensity are better than a steady pace. For example, the old thinking was walk or run at a steady pace within your recommended aerobic heart rate range. In this article, subjects ran using as much exertion as possible for 30 seconds, then walked slow to moderately for 2 minutes (recovery), then repeated the cycle about 8 times for 25-30 minutes of exercise a day. The control group walked briskly or jogged moderately for 45 minutes a day to keep a steady heart rate. the ones in the first group lost a lot more weight. Have you heard about this, and do you think its worth a try?

So far, since I'm only a month quit from smoking, I'm still working on keeping my heart rate DOWN when I walk - I'm in poor shape that way. Once I get in better shape and can tolerate a faster pace without my heart rate getting too high, I think I'll be experimenting with the intensity, etc.

Good idea.

I used to do that by raising the incline on the treadmill.

I hurt my foot on the treadmill last week, and I am nursing it now.

So, maybe I'll try the recumbant bike at the gym.

Thanks for the encouragement!

Mary, I know you probably don't like spending time at the gym but I found that walking alone doesn't help me much. I have to add weight training too. This actually helps burn fat alot faster. My trainer also mentioned that its better to do cardio after doing weights. It helps with the fat burn since your muscles are already in motion they just keep burning fat even after you stop.

Helen:

I have been thinking about adding in weights as well.

I do hate the gym, so boring and smelly (and full of germs), but I actually have a set of hand weights in my office, so no execuses there. Plus, I ended up with an extra thigh master, and I have that under my desk also, so I may as well use it.
