I hear you, Mary.
I recently read an article on exercise in Oprah magazine. I think it was the August issue. Anyway, the gist of the article was that new studies show that short bursts of intense exercise in between slower intensity are better than a steady pace. For example, the old thinking was walk or run at a steady pace within your recommended aerobic heart rate range. In this article, subjects ran using as much exertion as possible for 30 seconds, then walked slow to moderately for 2 minutes (recovery), then repeated the cycle about 8 times for 25-30 minutes of exercise a day. The control group walked briskly or jogged moderately for 45 minutes a day to keep a steady heart rate. the ones in the first group lost a lot more weight. Have you heard about this, and do you think its worth a try?
So far, since I'm only a month quit from smoking, I'm still working on keeping my heart rate DOWN when I walk - I'm in poor shape that way. Once I get in better shape and can tolerate a faster pace without my heart rate getting too high, I think I'll be experimenting with the intensity, etc.
