EMPTY NESTER STRESS

RLESTER30 - 8:18PM PST, Mar 2nd 2010

HELLO EVERYONE. I JOINED C K FEB. 26(FRIDAY) & ATE AND DRANK MYSELF SILLY OVER THE WEEKEND. I AM 51 AND I AM GOING THROUGH ONE OF THE MOST STRESSFUL PERIODS OF MY LIFE. I HAVE TWINS ENTERING COLLEGE FALL OF 2010 AND THIS LAST YEAR OF HIGH SCHOOL IS STRESSING ME OUT. PREPARING THEM TO ENTER THE WORLD IS PROVING TO BE MORE STRESSFUL:nono2: THAN I EVER IMAGINED. AT THE END OF THE DAY I FIND MYSELF ENJOYING A SINGLE SERVE (ONE FULL BOTTLE OF WINE) ALL BY MYSELF. FOR SOME REASON I HAVE STARTED EATING LIKE A TEENAGER MYSELF, LOTS OF CHIPS AND CANDY. I FIND MYSELF GOBBLING DOWN SALTY AND SWEET FOODS. OVER THE HOLIDAYS I KEPT BOXES OF CANDY UNDER MY BED WHICH I ATE ALL BY MYSELF.

I JOINED CK SO I COULD GET A GRIP ON MY EATING HABITS. I USED TO EXERCISE AND EAT HEALTHY THE MAJORITY OF THE TIME. NOW I AM SO STRESSED I EAT ALL DAY. HEALTHY FOODS TASTE SO BORING CANDY, POTATO CHIPS AND WINE MAKE ME FEEL GOOD. UNITL I GET ON THE SCALE.

MY TWINS GRADUATE FROM HIGH SCHOOL IN MAY. I NEED TO GET MYSELF TOGETHER SO I WON'T HAVE TO LOOK AT MUFFIN TOP ALL SUMMER LONG.

Sounds like you know it's stress eating, so now time to turn away from it and go back to old healthy habits that you mentioned. Start slowly, but start to get some exercise. You know how to do it! Your kids will be just fine, and so will you...good luck!

MZSWEET - 6:20AM PST, Mar 3rd 2010

What kinds of things can you do to help support your goal of not eating? Will pictures, or cut out pictures of all kinds of gross and YUKKY things help?
Pray, walk, read.... be encouraged and confident that you have spent your life preparing your teens to enter the next phase of their life. Whatever choices they make and the directions they go are reflective of THEIR choice and free will. The best and most perfect parental training does not guarantee that our children will make the right and good choices all the time. They will want to see the world, test their selves and actually "enjoy" tipping on the wild side.

Sit back and know that you have done your best for them (just keep a shoulder and tissue handy in case they need it), then focus on doing what's best for YOU. You will look good and feel good

Rlester, Wow, I could have written exactly the same post. The only differences are I am 6 years older than you and only have one teenager heading for collage in the fall. If I had two I don't know how well I would cope, probably not as well as you. I am a stress eater too, big time. I think a lot of people respond to stress the same way. I agree with the responses above. You have done all you can to prepare your kids. If you step back you might see that you did a really good job at that. Exercise is so key to fighting stress. If you can do even a little bit you will see big benefits. I'm guessing you already know all this. It's easier said than done for sure. Keep trying and reminding yourself of why you are here. To become healthier so that you will live long enough for those kids to come back one day and tell you what a great parent you were. Try and avoid the alcohol. In the end it will only add to your stress. Hang in there!

Thanks all for the support. I am back in the gym strong and counting calories. My second weigh in is next Monday. Just having one 5oz glass of wine (yes I measured). Trying not to stress although my daughter has been accepted to her first choice of schools (very expensive) and my son did not get accepted to his first choice. Lord, just let me get through the weekend without stuffing myself and de-railing my week of good work. I have to take my grand daughter (I have four kids, she is my oldest daugher's child) who is 3 to a birthday party. Lots of cake and gmas who drink plenty of wine...

Somewhere out there

I know what you feel like. Last year my two youngest move out together and it was the same week I took vacation. I was more than ready to go back to work. Exercising helps me burn off stress.
