How to cut a mango

The skin of a mango should not be eaten as it is very acidic. Try either of these two ways to prepare mango:

mango4.jpg Slice the mango along the longest sides, beside the stone. This area is called the 'cheek'.
mango5.jpg Make criss-cross cuts into the flesh, without cutting the skin.

With a sharp thin-bladed knife, cut off both ends of the fruit.

Place fruit on flat end and cut away peel from top to bottom along curvature of the fruit.

Cut fruit into slices by carving lengthwise along the pit.

Mango is best eaten raw. Pieces can also be frozen, made into juice, marmalade, compote, or puréed into sauces. Chutney is prepared from unripe, green mangoes. Dried mangoes are also available in the dried-fruit section of many markets.

Mango ideas

  • Top your breakfast cereal with mango chunks
  • Include mango in your favorite fruit shake or smoothie for a tropical taste
