How to calculate alcohol content

Calculating the alcohol content of drinks is important if you want to monitor your intake of alcohol.

“Percent alcohol” on labels refers to alcohol volume (ml alcohol/100 ml).

To convert this to grams (weight) of alcohol, multiply the percent volume by 0.8 – since 1 ml of alcohol weighs approximately 0.8 grams.

For example: For a 12 fl. oz can of beer (5% alcohol)

5% alcohol volume = 5% of 12 fl. oz
= 0.6 fl. oz
= 18 ml alcohol
(1 fl oz. = 30 ml)

Weight (18 ml x 0.8) = 14.4g alcohol

10 hints to avoid harmful drinking

  • Add up the alcohol you typically drink each day and on social occasions. How does this compare with “low-risk” amounts? If you are drinking too much, cut down.
  • Compare the alcohol content of different drinks and select those with lower content. Request half measures of alcohol in cocktails and mixed drinks. Dilute them and keep topping off with non-alcoholic drinks.
  • Try low-alcohol or non-alcohol alternatives (e.g. fruit juices, diet soda, and mineral water). Take your own to parties.
  • Before drinking alcohol, quench your thirst on water and non-alcoholic drinks - particularly after vigorous exercise or sports.
  • Drink slowly. Chugging or drinking fast is the major cause of illness and death from alcohol poisoning.
  • Avoid drinking in “rounds”.
  • Have a non-alcoholic 'spacer' between drinks (e.g. mineral water, diet soda).
  • Don't drink on an empty stomach. Food slows the rate of alcohol absorption.
  • Keep track of the number of drinks you have and know when to stop. Set a limit and stick to it.
  • Do not drive, swim, or operate machinery while under the influence.
