I want to get back to my pre-graduate school, pre-divorce weight. (I am now remarried and happy). I was 130 lbs, size 8 and comfortable with myself and my body for many years until I got divorced, went back to school, and had twins!
I've gained and lost the same 35 lbs over the last 7 years, not counting my pregnancy weight. I also want to be able to keep up with my very active 15 month old toddlers.
What is your motivation for losing weight?
I paid for three months in advance with the weight loss clinic. I knew that if I invested financially in my weight loss that I would feel obligated to stick to it. I am weighed in at the clinic every Saturday morning. This helps to keep me accountable.
I also want to be a healthy, active mom for my kids. I want to be able to take them on walks and to the park and the zoo. Last summer I didn't take them outside because I couldn't stand the heat. I was miserable, sweating in clothing that were designed to disguise my body. This summer we take walks every evening.
I'm getting to know the other young mothers in my neighborhood. It's making such a difference.
What is your weight-loss method?
I started on April 25, 2005 with a doctor who runs a weight loss clinic. It offers a moderate carb eating program - no white sugar, white flour, white pasta, white rice. I'm learning to enjoy whole grains, fruit, lean meats.
About a month into it I found the CalorieKing book and website. I've started logging everything I eat using the Food Diary and writing down my daily thoughts and feelings with the journal. Both tools have been invaluable.
I've lost ten pounds since joining CalorieKing.com. The Journal is helping me to identify patterns in my eating. The Forums offer emotional support and great advice.
What obstacles have you encountered while losing weight?
I have a lot of responsibilities, it is hard to find time for myself. My 15 month old twins keep me very busy plus I work part-time.
I go for a walk with my kids, pushing a twin stroller and two babies uphill for 30 minutes a day and work out on the elliptical at 10pm at night (only for 15 to 30 minutes but I do it every day). I find that working out gives me so much more energy than I used to have.
What tips do you have for others who are trying to lose weight?
Write down everything you eat! You will be amazed at how quickly the "little" things add up.
Also, get moving. I started on the elliptical only doing 10 minutes at the easiest level. Now I can do 30 minutes on level 4 in just a month and a half. Feeling my body get stronger is such a powerful motivator. The more I exercise the more I want to exercise.
How do you feel now that you're achieving success?
I ran into a friend the other day and she said, "You look so happy." She didn't mention my weight loss, she commented on my happiness. That was the best compliment.
I am so much more comfortable with myself. My relationships with my family have improved. I'm no longer miserable and hating myself. I look forward to going out with friends whereas before I would turn them down because I had nothing to wear that I felt comfortable in. There are so many benefits from losing weight!
How have the products or services offered by CalorieKing assisted you in your weigh-loss journey?
The Food and Exercise Diary has been invaluable. Even though I was eating "allowed" and healthy foods I was eating WAY too much. I also had too much fat in my diet. The Food Database and Food Diary have helped me keep an honest account of what I am eating. By watching my calorie intake I have been able to lose 10 more pounds.
The Journal and the Forums have probably been the most helpful. Writing down my thoughts concerning food and weight have helped me to identify destructive patterns. I am a recovering bulimic. I started my eating disorder when I was fourteen and was actively bingeing and purging until six months ago. 20 years of my life! CalorieKing has helped me to identify patterns that contributed to my eating disorder.
The Forum posters "confront" me with compassion and experience. I am grateful for both and look forward to continuing to be part of the CalorieKing community during the rest of my weight loss phase and maintainence.
