Before: 294 lbs After: 240 lbs
What are your weight-control goals?
I am trying to get down to a normal weight for me: 160 to 200 pounds. I don't know where in that range I should be until I get there, I guess. I've set my target at 175 because I don't have a big frame.
What is your motivation for losing weight?
A virus attacked my heart and I went into the hospital in heart failure mode. Although my obesity did not cause my cadiomyopathy, it greatly increased the seriousness of my condition once the problem began. My doctors told me that my heart could recover and suggested that weight loss and eventually exercise would aid the recovery. I became really motivated!
What is your weight-loss method?
I use the full range of CalorieKing tools and I love it. I love the choice, the freedom and the scientific certainty of it. I also appreciate the monitoring of fat, cholesterol and sodium that are now so important for me to keep at appropriate levels.
What obstacles have you encountered while losing weight?
Because of my heart condition, my family and friends have been very supportive and accommodating. They all seem to understand its seriousness and they go out of their way to make adjustments for my benefit. My biggest problems so far have been at group business dinners with set menus and other business-related lunches and dinners.
What tips do you have for others who are trying to lose weight?
Don't feel that you have to eat everything placed in front of you to please those who prepared the food. Don't let something remain on the table after you've eaten an appropriate amount. Don't unnecessarily tempt yourself. If it stays in front of you long enough, you will eat it. Remove it or ask someone to remove it. Don't feel as though each meal is your last, or that every meal must be an event.
How do you feel now that you're achieving success?
I feel wonderful. I am now free of symptoms and I am vigorously exercising. I no longer have any restrictions on my activities. I feel better than I've felt in many years. I don't recommend cardiomyopathy as a motivation for weight loss, though! It came out of nowhere. I didn't deserve to have a healthy heart with my years of overeating but it had been, nevertheless, healthy. But having now suffered a very serious and unexpected heart problem, I know that it would have been far better to go into it at an appropriate weight than as a critically obese person. It would be best for you to not run that risk if you can avoid it.
How have the products or services offered by CalorieKing assisted you in your weigh-loss journey?
I've used the downloaded software and I've used the books. But now I rely mostly on the online version and the Club (the food database and the Food and Exercise Diary). With these tools, I can log in anywhere in the world on anyone's computer and enter in my Diary and keep track of my progress. I love everything about CalorieKing.com!
