Q&A

What really motivated you to gain control of your weight this time?
We did a "Biggest Loser" type challenge at work. I wanted to win a paid day off. When the challenge was finished I continued to work on becoming healthier.
Was your ultimate goal to lose the pounds or to be able to do something that your weight prevented? Did you achieve that goal? What was it?
My ultimate goal was to be a healthy weight. I also wanted to run a 5k and become certified to teach water aerobics. I am at a healthy weight and I ran my first 5k in May. I was going to get certified to teach water aerobics in October; however, I was in a bad motor scooter accident and have been on crutches since September 15, 2009. I am still currently recovering.
How have you tried to lose weight in the past?
Yes; I lost 60 pounds in 1993/1994. I did it in a very unhealthy manner though. I kept it off for a couple of years and then gained the weight back plus more.
Why did you choose CalorieKing this time?
In 1993 I used the CalorieKing book to help me look up calories. I have tried the desktop versions and pda versions over the years but I didn't use it diligently. In 2008 I signed up for the online version.
What were some of the obstacles that got in the way while losing weight? And how did CalorieKing help you overcome them?
It's easy to lose motivation or get down on yourself when you mess up. The CK university lessons helped me think about weight loss in a rational manner. I also really enjoy the online forums because everyone is very supportive.
What in the CalorieKing program did you find most useful on your journey to weight control?
The ease of logging my food and exercise as well as being able to create custom foods and recipes really makes CK easy to use.
What tips would you give others who are trying to manage their weight?
Log everything; make yourself accountable for what you are eating. Do not deprive yourself of your favorite things but rather enjoy them in moderation. Vary your exercise (I enjoy yoga, running, spinning, water aerobics, weight lifting/strength training, walking). Drink lots of water. Remember that tomorrow is another day if you arenít happy with today. J
Reflecting on your motivation to gain control over your weight, how is the CalorieKing program helping you now?
I continue to log all my food and exercise even though I am in maintenance. I do not want to get complacent with my health/weight. I like that I can change my calorie targets as needed since I am unable to do a lot of exercise right now with my injuries. I still enjoy the friendships I have made with some of the members on the forums.
Why are you willing to allow CalorieKing to share your story with others?
Yes, if you think it will help others. If I can do it, anyone can.

Is this the right time and program for me?
