About this Recipe Makeover

Although orange creamsicles can be purchased ready-made and can be somewhat low in calories, store-bought regular orange creamsicles are made with higher-fat ingredients, lots of added sugar, artificial flavorings, and colorings. Or, if made at home, traditional recipes generally call for high-fat, high-sugar ingredients.

However, this madeover recipe replaces higher-fat ice cream with lower-fat, sugary orange sherbet with healthier yogurt and orange juice concentrate. And, the added bonus is that the family can have fun making them.

Ingredients Show Makeover Show Traditional

  • 2 cup (1 pint) vanilla low-fat ice cream, softened
  • 1 (6 oz) can frozen orange juice concentrate
  • 1 (6 oz) carton orange fat-free yogurt
  • 6 (5 oz) paper cups
  • 6 wooden popsicle sticks
  • 2 cup vanilla ice cream
  • 3 cup orange sherbet
  • 1/2 cup orange gelatin dessert mix
  • 6 popsicle molds, or 6 small cups and 6 wooden sticks

Directions:

In a large bowl, mix softened ice cream, juice concentrate and yogurt, stirring until thoroughly blended.

Pour into paper cups. Cover each cup with foil. Make a slit in foil with a knife and insert stick into orange mixture. Freeze until hard (about 6 hours). Remove foil and paper cups to serve.

Variations:

If preferred, use no-added-sugar ice cream and yogurt.
