About this Recipe Makeover

Traditional chicken wings, although tasty, are high in calories and fat. And, due to their small size, many can easily be gobbled up without notice. Add to that, dunks of high-fat blue cheese dip, and traditional wings score loads of calories.

Instead, this Recipe Makeover is flavorful yet seriously trims the calories and fat by simply removing the wing skin, skipping the butter often used in recipes, and adding an optional light dip on the side. Enjoy!

Ingredients Convert to Metric Show Makeover Show Traditional

  • 4.80 lb chicken wings (about 24 regular wings; about 3.2 oz each as purchased with bone/skin) *
  • 1/4 cup oyster sauce
  • 1/4 cup sweet chili sauce
  • 2 Tbsp sugar
  • 1/4 cup lime juice
  • 1 1/2 cup white wine
  • 2 fresh lime halves, to serve
  • 1/4 cup chopped coriander, to serve
  • 4.80 lb chicken wings, skin on (about 24 wings)
  • 1/4 cup oyster sauce
  • 1/4 cup sweet chili sauce
  • 2 Tbsp sugar
  • 3 Tbsp lime juice
  • 1 1/2 cup white wine
  • 2 fresh lime halves, to serve
  • 1/4 cup chopped coriander, to serve

Directions:

Remove skin from chicken wings; discard skin. (Or, if preferred, remove skin after grilling.)

In a shallow dish, combine oyster sauce, chili sauce, sugar, lime juice, and white wine. Mix well. Add chicken wings; covering the wings with the sauce marinade. Cover dish. Refrigerate overnight.

Remove chicken wings from marinade. Cook on/under a hot grill until golden brown, marinading as needed, and cooked through.

Serve on a platter with lime halves and sprinkle with coriander.

Variations:

If using skin-on wings, allow for extra calories and fat (see link to 'show traditional').

As an appetizer, can serve with veggie sticks, and/or Cilantro Yogurt Dip (see recipe link), or with a non-dairy dip (if dairy-free is required).

As an entrée, can serve with cooked rice and stir-fry vegetables.

Note: Serving suggestions are not included in the nutritional analysis.

Tips:

* For this lower-calorie recipe, skinless wings are used. In order to more easily remove the skin from the wings, select regular chicken wings versus the smaller buffalo wings.

Regular chicken wings, approx wt:

With skin/bone: 3.2 oz each

With skin, no bone: 1.7 oz each

Without skin/bone: 1.5 oz each
