About this Recipe Makeover

Traditional recipes, although tasty, can be high in calories and fat. The healthier Turkey Sloppy Joe recipe replaces regular ground beef with ground turkey and omits the added sugar.

  • 0.45 kg ground turkey
  • 1 cup thinly sliced onion
  • 1/2 cup chopped green pepper
  • 1 cup reduced-calorie, reduced-sodium catsup
  • 1/4 cup sweet pickle relish
  • 1 1/2 tsp chili powder
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 tsp seasoned salt
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/4 tsp celery seeds
  • 1 loaf (1 lb.) French or Italian bread
  • 0.45 kg ground beef
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1 green bell pepper, chopped
  • 171.43 g tomato paste
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 Tbsp chili powder
  • 1 tsp white vinegar
  • 3 Tbsp sugar
  • 1/2 tsp oregano
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 8 hamburger buns

Directions:

In large skillet, over medium-high heat, sauté turkey, onion and green pepper 5 minutes or until turkey is no longer pink. Add ketchup, relish, chili powder, Worcestershire sauce, seasoned salt, garlic powder and celery seed. Bring to boil. Reduce heat to low; cover and simmer 30 minutes.

Slice bread in half, lengthwise, and toast under broiler 1 to 2 minutes or until lightly browned.

To serve, spoon turkey mixture over one half of bread and top with other half. Cut into 8 slices.
