    Traditional creamy pasta dishes have oodles of fat and calories. The healthier Pasta with Creamy Mushroom Sauce uses fresh herbs, low-fat sour cream, Canadian bacon, and less shell pasta.
  Recipe Makeover

    2 slices Canadian bacon or links of lean turkey bacon, chopped
    1 onion, chopped
    1 clove garlic, crushed
    4 flat mushrooms, sliced
    200 g low-fat sour cream
    3 cup shell pasta, cooked
    1 pinch freshly ground black pepper
    1 Tbsp fresh thyme leaves

  Traditional Recipe

    2 thick slices bacon, chopped
    1 onion, chopped
    1 1/2 tsp garlic powder
    4 flat mushrooms, sliced
    200 g sour cream (or heavy cream)
    4 cup shell pasta, cooked
    1 pinch black pepper
    1 tsp ground thyme


    Gently cook bacon, onion and garlic in a large saucepan until soft. Add mushrooms. Cook 3 minutes. Drain fat. Remove from heat. Add sour cream, pasta, pepper, and thyme; combine. Stir in cooked pasta.

    Serve hot in pasta bowls.


    If desired, serve sprinkled with grated Parmesan cheese and a green salad and/or vegetables.

    If nonfat sour cream is available, it can be substituted in an equal amount.
