Are You Weight-Loss Ready?

Being ready for weight-loss may seem like a strange idea at first – surely all you need is a few too many pounds and you're as "ready" as you can be? Not so. To be truly ready for the challenges of weight-loss you need to have your goals, expectations, knowledge and skills finely tuned.

Take this quiz and find out if you're really prepared for weight-loss or if there's more you can do to increase your chances of success.


  1. Lately your life has just been one big calorie party – as your ill-fitting jeans so constantly remind you. So you decide to lose some weight. To get started do you:

    Drive over to the nearest nutrition store and buy them out of weight-loss pills and supplements?
    Binge on Twinkies, Big Macs and Haagen-Dazs – after all, you won’t ever be eating them ever again in your life!
    Find low-calorie substitutes for your fatty calorie-dense foods. Educate yourself on the amount of carbs, fat and calories in what you eat, and begin to exercise regularly.
    Make rotating spreadsheets of what you will eat, when you will eat it, when you will exercise and how much water you will drink.


  2. The most effective way to lose weight is:

    Cut back on high-fat foods.
    Cut out high-carb foods.
    Cut out high-fat and high-carb foods.
    To eat a well-balanced diet.


  3. Setting goals is an important part of a successful weight-loss program. What are your goals for weight-loss?

    Lose approximately 1 lb a week until I am at my ideal weight.
    Lose 4 lbs a week for the first month, then 2 lbs a week until I am as thin as I used to be.
    Setting goals is not really my thing; I just eat healthily, do a bit of exercise, and see what happens.
    Lose as much as a I can, as fast as I can!

  5. What sort of attitude would you start a weight-loss program with?

    I hate the way I look. This time I'm really going to lose weight. (And if I don't look like Halle Berry after 12 weeks, I'll never look at myself in a mirror ever again.)
    Weight-loss programs have never worked for me. I'm bound to fail again. But (sigh) I'll try anyway.
    I've learnt a lot from my past mistakes and am determined I won't make them again. Let's give this another go.
    This is it. This time I'm going to make it. Who cares about the past? I'm not even going to think about it!


  6. Oh-oh! You're about to start counting calories and losing weight, but you still have a month's supply of your favorite caramel candies in the house. What do you do?

    Polish them off today; you promise you won't eat another morsel after tomorrow.
    Get them all out of the house immediately; out of sight and out of mind.
    Hide them so they're not in plain sight.
    Fill the candy bowls! Stock the fridge! You have willpower and you will resist!


  7. While you are trying to lose weight, your Mom comes to visit you with a fresh tray of her deliciously rich home-made fudge brownies, smothered in warm chocolate frosting. What do you do?

    Take the tray from your Mom, scrape the brownies straight into the trash can and ask her what she thinks she is doing sabotaging your diet.
    Sit down with a giant mug of hot chocolate and chat with her as you devour the whole tray. (You don't want to hurt her feelings).
    Tell her you appreciate the thought but are on a diet so won't have any. But then, when she keeps insisting, you break down and have one piece.
    You know you can't stop at one piece, so you tell your Mom you'll have them later. Later on however, you give them to your neighbors.


  8. Your weight-loss regime is going really well until one day you succumb to 4 doughnuts, 2 McDonalds' combos, a Claim Jumper steak meal and a giant piece of cheesecake. When you wake up the next morning what do you do?

    Think about what provoked the binge and develop healthier ways to manage your desires to binge.
    Increase exercise for the rest of the week and restrict calories so that you still meet your weekly targets.
    Well, you've blown it haven't you? Of course you couldn't stick to a diet!
    Decide to sue McDonalds and Claim Jumper for your failed diet.


  9. Two weeks into your new weight-loss regime your best friend decides to throw a cocktail party. What's your party plan?

    Save up all your calories by not eating for two days. That way you can eat and drink what you like at the party!
    Who needs a plan? It's a party!
    Drink only water and stick to the carrots and celery for snacks.
    Fill up with a low-calorie nutritious snack before you leave for the party. At the party, take some time to survey the bounty and think about your goals before deciding what you will eat and drink.
