CalorieKing & Joslin

CalorieKing and Joslin Diabetes Center team up to promote diabetes prevention and management through healthy food choices.

CalorieKing, America's leading provider of calorie-centric education tools for food awareness, and Joslin Diabetes Center, the world's largest diabetes clinic, diabetes research center and provider of diabetes education, announced today an alliance to promote type 2 diabetes awareness, prevention and management.

The first step of this campaign is access to Joslin-authored material through the CalorieKing nutrition toolbar at The innovative toolbar, which operates like a search engine browser tool but for foods, was previously available only to health plans and employers. The toolbar is designed to promote daily food awareness in order to help those seeking to bridge the gap between weight loss and lifelong weight control. Food awareness is of particular importance in the prevention and effective management of diabetes. The toolbar can also be downloaded through a link from the Joslin website at

"Poor food choices often lead to excess weight, a factor known to increase risk for type 2 diabetes, yet treatment for excess weight is often left to commercial self-help programs and commercial diet programs," said Keith P. McGuinness, CEO of CalorieKing. "Our alliance gives us new ways to reach those at risk for diabetes. We will create tools that consumers and healthcare providers can use to achieve weight control, help prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes, and improve diabetes management. I cannot think of a better partner for this than Joslin."

"By partnering with CalorieKing, which has one of the most popular food choice sites on the web, we are able to significantly increase the number of people we can reach," says Osama Hamdy, M.D., Ph.D., Medical Director of Joslin's Obesity Clinical Program. "Each time we can reach a person who has pre-diabetes or diabetes with our model of patient education, we have the opportunity to help prevent or delay diabetes complications."

Together, Joslin and CalorieKing will develop food and physical activity awareness tools to help people with or at risk for type 2 diabetes make more informed choices about food and reduce the health consequences of the disease. In addition, CalorieKing and Joslin will build a culturally specific Latino food database that will aid in the development of nutrition tools to support the health of America's Latino population, which is at increased risk for diabetes.
