Kathy (ktpugs) lost 51 lbs!

What were your weight-control goals?
My first goal was just to get STARTED. At 235, I felt my first big milestone was getting below 200. Now, at 184, I'm looking toward 175 where I'll no longer be obese, but "only" overweight. I am planning to reach a final goal of 135-145.
What motivated you to lose weight?
Health and longevity. At my annual checkup in August '02 my blood pressure was 152/102, my cholesterol was 263 and my triglycerides were 265. Also, I had an abnormal EKG and had to have a stress test. This was the big scare because everyone in my family has heart disease. Fortunately the stress test turned out okay but I had already made up my mind to improve my health. Both of my brothers had heart attacks in their early fifties and I'll be turning 50 in June of '03. I don't want it to happen to me.
What was your weight-loss method?
My doctor gave me the CK Food & Exercise Diary and it literally changed my life. At first I only counted calories after researching and finding what my caloric needs were. After losing about 20 pounds I joined the CK web site and learned more about macronutrients and reworked my intake to lower carbs and eliminate white flour/white sugar. Now I eat around 1600 calories, walk 3 miles most days, alternate strength training and yoga 5 times a week, and drink 3-4 liters of water a day.
What were some obstacles you encountered while losing weight?
The biggest obstacle was getting out of denial and admitting I had a problem that only I could fix. And of course, the usual, like holidays and traveling. And getting out of bed at 5:30 to walk!
What tips do you have for others who are trying to lose weight?
The only difference between not losing weight and losing weight is doing it. Cut out processed foods and increase fiber. Concentrate on healthy carbs and fats. Find an exercise you enjoy. Approach this as a lifestyle, not a diet. Focus on better health.
How do you feel now that you've lost weight?
I've never felt better! I have lots of energy and a more positive outlook on life. My blood pressure is back to normal (110/70), my cholesterol is 148 and my tryglicerides are 97.
