CalorieKing Clinical System Summary

The objective of the CalorieKing Clinical System is:

To teach independent, long-term weight control through a guided program that has a solid, scientific foundation and is based on personal education and permanent behavior change.

The CalorieKing Clinical System uses the web-based CalorieKing Online program and Provider Counseling to achieve lasting weight management. The most powerful components of the CalorieKing System are:

  1. Membership in the CalorieKing Online Program
  2. Ongoing provider counseling.

1. CalorieKing Online Membership

The web-based CalorieKing Online Program takes patients at their own pace from the initial stages of weight loss through to weight maintenance. Each level of the program brings together related information, goals, tools, and tips that target a specific stage of weight control. The participant is guided through each level, achieving what is necessary to progress from one stage to the next in a focused and holistic way while gradually forming a solid foundation for life-long weight-control knowledge and behaviors.

The program goal is to have a new participant lose at least 10 percent of their body weight by the end of the program, having learned the skills and information they need to keep that weight off - lose more if need be - and control their weight independently and for the long-term.

Program Structure (both Online and Provider Counseling)

The program is divided into three stages, corresponding to three stages of weight control:

Bronze - Kick start

This is where initial weight loss happens and the basic principles of healthy weight management are learned.

Silver - Make it real

The significant shift in behavior that constitutes a true turn-around in terms of weight control occurs at the Silver stage.

Gold - Make it last

Preventing weight regain is the focus of Gold. Participants begin the transition to independent weight control and weight maintenance.

Each stage consists of a series of levels with specific and related requirements (including topics, tasks, goals and other practical activities), that the participant completes before moving to the next level. Program recommendations give the participant even more ways to apply what they learn. The outline page for Silver Level 1 above is an example.

Posted requirements and recommendations guide the participant through the learning and the practice of weight management step by step, and ensure they understand the necessary concepts and make the behavior changes necessary to progress.

2. Provider Counseling

While the online component of the program is self-paced and may last for an indefinite period of time, the provider counseling component provides for ten or more sessions of 15 to 20 minutes. The provider determines the number of sessions to use and when to use them. As with CalorieKing Online, the bronze, silver, and gold structure is followed by the provider so that counseling may be offered independently or in conjunction with the online component. This format provides the flexibility to match the online (self-help) component with as many or as few counseling sessions as may be needed for a specific patient.

For patients that do not have Internet access, CalorieKing provides printed material in place of the online program component.
