View BECKAMARIE's food & exercise for this day

Good Morning to all those I hold ‘near and dear’….

Matthew and I went down mid-morning on Saturday to get to the race expo early and get settled into the room… I thought I had sufficient info from the web site to navigate our little endeavor but I was lacking considerably and my ever patient husband had to navigate by instinct which worked much better in the end. J We are the proud owners of a Cincinnati street map now!

We stocked up on freebies at the expo and gathered up my race shirt, ‘bib’ #, safety pins, band aids, ‘gu’s’, pace chart wrist band, and anything else that looked good…. Then we went back to our room and crashed. If you are familiar with Cincy we stayed at the Hampton Inn in Covington which is across the street from Willie’s Sports Bar and Grill. (you can see it from I-75S.)

We walked over to Willie’s for some great dinner. They so graciously honored my request for marinara on the grilled chicken penne instead of the listed white cream sauce. We got to watch the Derby there and it was a great time!

Mom, Dad and the boys arrived around 8:30pm so I hung out at the pool to visit for a little while and watch the ‘hooligans’ splash and try to drown each other. Those little guys are great swimmers… I headed to bed around 9:30 and hardly slept a wink, of course…

The alarm went off at 4:00am and Matt drove me as close as he could get to the start line and kissed me goodbye. I located my ‘pace’ team easily and chatted with all the 4 hour hopefuls as we shivered a little. It really wasn’t bad, around 50 degrees. There was a really nice little prayer at 10 minutes till 6:00 and the wheelchairs started at 5 minutes till. At 6:00 sharp the cannon shot and off we went!

I managed to hold my 4 hour pace till about 13 miles, then I started to watch the seconds add to every mile… But they weren’t slipping away too rapidly and I wanted a strong finish so I just held as well as I could and felt awesome the entire race!

The spectators were an absolute ‘hoot’! There wasn’t a stretch of road where we didn’t see at least a handful of spectators the entire race. God bless spectators! I don’t know how we would get it done without them…

I chatted with several other racers and gave and received encouragement all along… One guy had trained on the course and could tell me where the last little hills were. There were several gradual inclines and I felt only one or two really steep hills, especially the one going into the Eden Park neighborhood. I did hear another runner comment that if he heard the phrase “just one more hill…” from another spectator he was going to hurt them J Rule #1, don’t EVER lie to a runner trying to make them feel better….

Matt and Thurman greeted me at the 20 mile stretch where I shoved the fleece tied around my waist to Matt and all I could manage to say to my Darling was “I’m 3 minutes off pace!”. It was incredibly wonderful to see them at that moment and I am so grateful that they pushed through all the obstacles they encountered to see me for just a moment. Mom and Jalon were at around the 25 mile stretch and Dad and Kasper were there to tell me to bust it out from where I could see the actual finish line.

Matt was at the finish line but there were 8’ chain link fence corralling the racers through the exit chute. So I got my reward kiss through the fencing J. Having Matt there at the finish line was my greatest reward. His support and patience through everything is amazing and I am sure he was neglected quite a bit these past few months…

I felt really great the entire race and finished feeling great. My official finish time was 4:10:56, My dream is to break 4:00 so tentative plans are to attempt that at the Columbus Marathon, October 2007!

I want to thank each and every one of you for your love and encouragement! Thank you for giving me the strength to train through a few really cold mornings and rain and snow (sometimes in the same run. J) Special thanks to my brother Jalon who is always ready to toss his bike in the car and ride the trails next to me… He rode alongside of me on the 20 mile training run and never faltered!

Love and Hugs! -Rebekah
