Tuesday, Feb 19 2008 - Better... ("Human Struggle" Preview)

View BRIENMALONE's food & exercise for this day

Well, I'm off to a better start this morning. I finished my paper for school around 8:30pm, so I worked ahead for this week and went to bed at 10pm. At 5:30am my eyes opened. I laid there for a few minutes before getting up at 5:45. I got dressed for the gym, but went downstairs to load my MP3 player with the text-to-speech audiobook that I have been formatting.

I had a half cup of oatmeal (unflavored) to fuel up.

Everything was going great... but then I sat in front of the computer and piddled away my time until it was too late to work out. GRR!!

Oh well. At least I had a good night's sleep and I didn't have a midnight snack.

My goal for today is to keep my foods clean and to keep it at 1850 calories.

I actually had a really long blog planned for today, but I want to clarify some ideas before I commit them to my journal. We'll see if anything comes of it. Here is a teaser:

The Human Struggle
Being human means perpetually struggling with doing what you should do versus doing what you want to do. Discipline is the power to do what you should in spite of your wants.

Self-indulgent behavior is what happens when the wants win.

The tendency to be self-indulgent is deeply rooted in our makeup, and as such is difficult to fight. We have an entire suite of psychological tools to control our self-indulgent tendencies, but we typically run to the wrong ones.

More later!

Foods on target for the day (and I'm stuffed!) Just need to get to the gym in the morning and I'll be right back on target!

It's amazing how much time we can twiddle away on a computer no matter how tired, hungry, or ready-to-get-out-the-door we are.
I just got finished reading "A New Earth" by Echkart Tolle. He talks about just this type of struggle except that what you call "wants" he calls "Ego". It was a fascinating, life-changing book!

Brien,

I hear you brother. My laptop and desktop are HUGE distractions. BTW, here is some additional material for your "Human Struggle" draft blog entry: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Akrasia
