BRIENMALONE's CalorieKing blog

View BRIENMALONE's food & exercise for this day

It is amazing how good a whole food meal makes you feel inside. I just polished off some of my "famous" homemade soup.

Brien's Soup (high carb/low fat version)
10oz baked potato + skin
4 oz of cooked chicken breast
1 cup of Imagine organic soup (tomato basil)
2 servings of broccoli and cauliflower.
(550 calories)

It's a huge meal - I eat it from a 1 liter container (4.7 cups) and it is almost full. Brien's Soup is a bit bland to eat without salt, but eat it without salt a few times and you start to notice the flavors of all of the different foods.

The great thing about this soup is that you can completely control the macronutrient ratios to suit your needs.

Need more (healthy) fat? Add half a serving of cashews (14g or 1/8 cup).
Need more protein? Use 8oz of chicken instead of 4.
More simple carbs? Add more potato (or some long grain brown rice).
More fibrous carbs? Add more Broccoli.

The high carb meal above is tuned to suit my "typical day" which includes high protein (cottage cheese) snacks and flax-seed peanut butter in the morning.

The best thing about this is how kind the meal is to your digestive system. I never really paid attention how my stomach feels after a meal until I started eating this stuff. This is what sold me on the idea that I really should be eating whole foods all the time.

Hi Brien: Does look like a wonderful soup - and I agree about the whole foods. I hit a plateau in my weight for a couple weeks - cut out a couple of my favorite processed foods and went back to dropping ~1.5/week. But you are a tall guy - your calorie allowance is very high next to mine. The meal you outline would be almost two meals for me. An generous meal for me is about 400 cal; average meals are closer to 300 cal and snacks are 150 to 200. Ah well, I have to remind myself there are things I like about being 61" tall, but eating like I have a hollow leg shouldn't be one of them. * * * Thanks for your comments on my blog! Myself, I'm big into preparation and choosing a start date. But I agree that any day, any time, is a GREAT time to start something new. Have a good weekend. -Otter
