View BRIENMALONE's food & exercise for this day

I really underguessed on my calories today.

Spinach and Strawberries
My wife made more smoothie than she could eat. I dumped some protein powder in and half a banana and polished off the whipped 24oz cup of fruit. There was a lot of air in the mix apparently because the ingredients only totaled about 300 or so.

My wife bought this huge container of strawberries -- probably 6 quarts in size. I packed two small containers for my snacks today which weighed in at about 100g each. I thought strawberries were a calorie dense food; but it turns out they're not. 100g is only 32 calories. (not the 150 that I thought)

Lunch was a missed guess, too! I fill a 5 cup container with "good stuff" every day. Usually it includes a baked potato and lands between 550 and 750 calories, but not today. Ham + lots of spinach + fibrous carbs = 330 calories.

And I only have another 32 calorie container of strawberries to eat between now (1:45pm) and dinner!

Strawberries and spinach are two foods that take up a lot of space, make you feel satiated, but don't cost much in terms of calories.

The Weekend - One Heart Attack Special, Please
Now that I'm not blogging every day, I really need to at least do a recap. On Saturday, we took the new Sprinter from Escondido to Oceanside. (The Sprinter is a light-rail train that runs 22 miles to the coast in North County San Diego. It just opened in mid March.) For $8 round trip, we got to enjoy NOT driving on the interestate and NOT fighting for parking.

Foodwise, I called Saturday a cheat day. We took a stroll from the train station to "Ruby's", a 50's styled restaurant perched at the end of a really long pier. If you can handle the hour long wait, the panoramic ocean view is fantastic. I ate a gigantic hickory burger with bacon and onion rings + fries. Afterward we walked to ColdStone and I had a "founder's favorite".

Within an hour of eating all of this crap, I completely crashed -- even fell asleep on the train ride home.

I was surprised that this (easily) 2700 calorie meal didn't absolutely fill me up! Looking back, we didn't get to have lunch until 2pm. That was the first food since my sandwich & fruit meal at 8am! We also did a LOT of walking - and I'm always hefting and slinging my energetic three year old around. Talk about a workout! I didn't really have much in the way of dinner, but did find myself hungry enough to eat a 400 calorie meal around 9:30pm.

Food for Sunday was okay... much more "on track".

Quantity and Interval
I really have to watch what I'm doing with my calories. I've been missing meals during the week, binging on weekends, and "making up for it" by starving again during the week. This cycle is guaranteed to keep fat right on your body.

I'll see if I can find the chapter in Chris Aceto's book that explains what happens when you do this. It's very enlightening.

The train ride sounds wonderful! I lived in Calabasas 1996-2000 and taught school in Agoura Hills. Loved going to the beach and driving along the ocean. I am back in Texas now.
You are lucky as a young man, to be able to consume so many calories and still lose weight. That is not fair, but oh that's right...life is not fair:)
When you are a sedentary senior short woman you are not allowed that!
I, too, love the strawberries and also spinach and the little fresh tomatoes. We can eat a lot of those without breaking the calorie intake!
Have a great Thursday! Eliza
