MedGem and Estimating Your BMR
The BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) or RMR (Resting Metabolic Rate) is the number of calories you would burn if you were to lie motionless all day. Rebecca (my last personal trainer years ago) suggested that if you eat your BMR calories every day, everything you do, from walking down a hallway to scratching your eyebrow will burn fat. While this is a bit of an oversimplification, the approach is valid.

Furious

I just lost a blog that I spent two hours writing. I was trying to type the letter "I" followed by a space... but I missed the shift key and hit [ctrl]+I, which opened my favorites, and the [space bar] which loaded the first entry on my favorites list. Because I left the blog page, I lost everything.

When I make my own diet and exercise blogging site, I think I'll include an easy little piece of AJAX code that automatically saves a draft every few minutes. I've lost so many blogs ...

New Toy - MedGem

I finally bought a MedGem! When I was working with Rebecca (trainer) at Bally's, every month or so, she would hook me up to this gadget called a BodyGem. It was a little plastic device about the size of a juice-box with a plug and a disposable mouthpiece. You breathe through it for about 10-15 minutes and it tells you your Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) to a high degree of accuracy. (It calculates RMR based on oxygen consumption.)

The MedGem is a step up from the BodyGem -- the only real diff...

Well - here comes the true test. When my wife and I met, I was 180 lbs.

By the time we were married, I was 190. After a year of living together, I was 195ish... which was still fine. But when I had a bunch of life events hit me all at once. 2004/2005 came like this: wife pregnant, bought townhouse, son born, started school. I was so overwhelmed and had so little time that I threw diet and exercise out the window.

Well, guess what? I'm about to do it all over again. The whole thing.
