I finally bought a MedGem! When I was working with Rebecca (trainer) at Bally's, every month or so, she would hook me up to this gadget called a BodyGem. It was a little plastic device about the size of a juice-box with a plug and a disposable mouthpiece. You breathe through it for about 10-15 minutes and it tells you your Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) to a high degree of accuracy. (It calculates RMR based on oxygen consumption.)
The MedGem is a step up from the BodyGem -- the only real difference is that it reads your VO2 Max in addition to your RMR.
The box cost $2250 new (or more) but I bought it on ebay for $200! It came with software and half a dozen breathing tubes. I'm so excited to try it out!
Now, I'll be able to see if the 3 low1 high method really keeps my metabolism from dropping!

Hey Brien: Very cool tool! Will you also check readings once a month, or will you do readings more frequently to start, to get a sort of base-line? (Obviously, I'm not a very good geek. I gotta learn to use e-bay!). -otter
