Monday, Jun 30 2008 - Avoiding the Issue?
View BRIENMALONE's food & exercise for this day
So, I've posted two articles in my blog, but I haven't talked about what I have been doing personally.
The welcome-back to 2003 with my trainer has taken off to a slow start. To be honest, ever since I signed the check for 10 lessons, I have been sabotaging myself. It is as if when I signed that check, I tried to sign over responsibility for my health to my trainer.
Consciously I know better, but subconsciously I think I'm looking for her to "save me".
How pathetic. Rebecca can push me, but I have to get my act together. I need to get back into that curious, experimental mode that I was in back in December. I have to change what I am doing in order to make progress.
7 Months
I can hardly believe that I started a serious run at fitness almost 7 months ago (and stopped 4 months ago). I've gained back 10 of the 20 lbs that I've lost... As reported a few months ago, at least I haven't stopped eating those healthy foods during the day. I still eat cottage cheese and fruit for snacks, and "Brien's Soup" for lunch... Breakfast is hit and miss as I add unhealthy extras to my healthy Flax PB+J... Dinner is usually okay - but I chase it down with dessert almost every night. Sometimes two desserts a night.
Come One, Come All!
The San Diego County Fair at Del Mar is going on now. It's a huge event with tens of thousands of people... One of the few opportunities that my son has to see cows, sheep, chickens and bunnies... Oh - and his favorite monster trucks. They even have acres of rides and games. It's like a mini Disneyland with livestock *laugh*. We got free tickets through my wife's work, so we decided to check it out this past weekend.
Deep Fried What?
A major attraction for many to the fair is the "fair food". One place in particular is famous for deep frying things that you would never think of. Deep fried twinkies... Deep fried Peanut Butter and Jelly sandwiches... Deep Fried Oreos... Wrap a doughnut around each of these things and you've got the idea. Every year, they add some potentially disgusting item to the menu... No disappointment this year: They offered a Krispy Kreme chicken sandwich. They put a chicken breast in between two doughnuts and cover it with raspberry sauce and honey. ( byak. ghawk. bleck. No thanks. )
Making my mind up for me...
When we finally got hungry, Amy and I queued up in the largest line we could find. There was a semi-truck and trailer parked off to one side. The trailer converted into a gigantic barbecue, on which they cooked corn, 1/2 lb patties, half chickens and sausage the length of your arm.
In spite of my better judgment, I eyed the gigantic burger and greasy fries. My wife said she wanted one of those giantsausage dog things. As we were standing in line, a guy in his mid to late 20s walks up with another guy in his late 40s. They are extremely lean, fit guys... When their equally fit spouses walked up, they looked like a commercial for REI. All they had to do was point in random directions and make goofy smiles and we could have a photo shoot.
They younger guy looked at the older guy and said, "You think they have anything healthy here?"
"I dunno... I guess I'll have the chicken. ...take the skin off, I guess...
"Yeah. I guess that will work."
My wife looked at me and said, "I... think I'll have the chicken."
"That'll work. I think I'd like to go somewhere else," I replied.
"Yeah... why don't we do that?"
So the fit people made our minds up for us. We found another stand that sold veggie pitas. They stir fried the veggies, but the lettuce was fresh... After I scooped the full cup of sour cream and cheese off the top, it was a reasonably healthy meal. Wife ended up getting a hot dog anyway, but it wasn't an 18" bratwurst, it was an 8" hot dog that she shared with Colin.
Alas, that resolve was not to last. After we left the fair, we made a bee-line for Golden Spoon and had some yogurt... When I got home, I had more.
Betty Crocker's Crack
Cake is like crack to me. Especially cream cheese frosting. My wife had a moment of weakness and bakes a cake. Not just any cake - my favorite... yellow cake with cream cheese frosting.
I didn't have any of it when the smell filled the house, but I had a slice with breakfast this morning. (At least it was a small slice.)
I was so mad at myself for caving in, that I decided I wouldn't touch another piece. In fact, This is the first night in as long as I can remember that I ate dinner... and didn't have any dessert. My foods have been dead on track today except for the breakfast cake part.
Guess What? You Started!
So, I'm taking this as a sign that I have started getting my foods on track again. I officially started with my 10am snack of cottage cheese and an apricot. Let me see how long I can keep it up without blowing it!

You can do it, Brien! It is so not easy! One day at a time, one meal at a time! Sometimes, one hour at a time! You can do it. And so can I!
