Sunday, Jul 27 2008 - No Yak! + Soccer Team
View BRIENMALONE's food & exercise for this day
Hey! I'm happy to report that I had a yakless session with Rebecca on Friday *laugh*. After that horrible experience last week, I didn't know what to expect. We pushed through compound supersets (almost) at full speed. Considering that I only had 4 hours of sleep and didn't eat breakfast that morning, I was amazed that I had the energy to power through. I did fade toward the end so we had to skip the ab work, but I made it through the major stuff.
Is it wrong to be disappointed that I wasn't very sore the next day?
Soccer Team
My little boy (age 3) loves to play what he calls "soccer team" with me. We started this a few months ago. He'd put a volleyball on the ground and kick it to me. Within a week he was kicking so hard and so high that I was afraid he was going to break something, so we switched to a lighter ball, and now he uses his hands to throw the ball to me.
This weekend I decided to show him what "real" soccer was all about, so we went to Toys R Us and bought a "3" size soccer ball (who knew they made them that small?), and then to a sporting good store for a few small orange cones, a pump and a whistle on a lanyard.
We went to a real soccer field in a nearby neighborhood to practice. The lesson today was "kick and run" and we even got so far as to pass the ball back and forth as we ran down the mini-field to make a goal (this sounds a lot more 'pro' than it was, of course).
We had such a blast! Every time he would score a goal, I'd let him blow the coach's whistle. I have never seen him more focused on anything than he was today.
Oh, Yeah... Old and Fat
The mini field I set up for Colin was about 15 yards long by 4 yards wide. When he was worn out, I decided to dribble the ball across the width of the field. This is a standard soccer field: 100 yards long by 60 wide. I was dribbling down like a champ, but by the time I got back to my wife on the opposite side, I said: "Oh... *GASP*... yeah... *pant pant* I forgot *gasp*... I'm old *wheeeze* and fat *pant*
My lungs were seriously on fire! In spite of being able to run a decent pace on an eliptical machine for 45-60 minutes, that 120 yard run tore me up!
Assuming I get to bed at a decent hour, I might just sneak back out there early in the morning and dribble the ball around the outside of the field a few times.

I LOVE it! Dribbling is probably better than what you are doing with your trainer! That is so great that your son and you can enjoy this together!
Good for both of you! Keep up the good work! <3 ELIZA

Very cool Brien. Enjoy that time with your son. It's what being a father is all about!! Also don't feel too bad about being winded after navigating the soccer field. Different muscle groups than the elliptical

LOL! It is funny how you can Own one type of exercise and think you should be fine with other types of exercise too, but then when you do another type of exercise it totally kicks your butt! I guess that's the reason why cross-training works you out so well... I'm glad that your PT workout was yakless, and yes, I know what you mean about not being "sore enough". It kinda makes you feel like maybe you should have worked a little harder during the workout. Of course other times I feel like my workout wasn't too bad, but then the next morning I can barely move.
