BRIENMALONE's CalorieKing Blog
My name is Brien Malone. I am a 36 year old husband, father, web developer and life-long learner in San Marcos, California.
Over the years, I have had a lot of different body shapes. Skinny in grade school, fat in high school, skinny in college... then all over the map after that. It's funny - I can tell almost to the month when a photo of me is taken based entirely on the style of clothes and the size of my butt *laugh*

So, It's been a year. Let's take stock.
A year and a week ago, I woke up and said: "I've got to get to the gym". Starting at 253lbs in December, I got down to a low of 228 in March. After doing cardio every day for a week, I fell off the wagon. In the intervening time, I gained and lost weight... until today, I'm back where I started at 250.
--HOWEVER--
This isn't yesterday's 250.
In December 2007, I was wearing slacks with a size 42 waist because my 40s no longer ...

Two months? Really? Wow. I'm sure I've fallen off the map for most of you -- *waves* to JennCST, TracerFire, Chemm, Eliza, Shadeau and Skennon

But - rest assured, I'm still out here.
So Long Old Friend
I wrapped up my 10 sessions with my old personal trainer friend in September. I was bummed that I couldn't afford to keep going. She got me out of bed on Fridays. I really enjoy working with Rebecca. She's a lot like Jillian from the Biggest Loser... and MAN she knows her stuff. She wil...

The worst words ever spoken: I'm taking a break from my diet during vacation. *laugh*
Rich Burnout
I've been in Nashville for the past week visiting family. The moment we stepped into the airport I decided that my diet was going on a shelf. Nashville has some amazing restaurants (so much better than San Diego) and I didn't want to miss out on a thing.
We ate out for almost every meal... and not just Mc Donalds. We usually only had room for two meals a day because we'd eat Cracker B...

I decided to tackle my dietary vices one at a time this past week.
I have never done drugs, don't gamble, drink alcohol only on my birthday and new year's eve. My vice is sugar.
I have been eating dessert every night for months. After my session with Rebecca (trainer) two Fridays ago, I was pumped and focused. I decided that this would be the week that I break my sugar habit. I slipped and cheated until Thursday night... then dropped desserts.
In keeping with my post about visual...

How Food Proximity and Visibility Can Keep You Thin or Make You Fat
I just read a fascinating paper that reveals the results of a study on how the availability and visibility of food (specifically, chocolate) affects consumption.
Wansink B, Painter JE, Lee YK. Int J Obes, 2006 May, 30(5):871-5. Cornell Food and Brand Laboratory, Cornell University, Ithaca, NY, USA.
In the study, 40 desk-bound adults were monitored over a 4 week period in an office environment. Four conditions wer...
