Saturday, Jul 23 2011 - Hummus Can Hurt!

View CALORIEHOLIC's food & exercise for this day

OK, made it through day one of the weekend (I'm counting Friday as day one, especially because I was off work yesterday). To be honest (since otherwise, what's the point of participating in this website?), it didn't go as well as I had hoped/planned. I had a healthy morning snack, but by the time my friends arrived to pick me up for lunch I was STARVING. They caught me off guard by insisting that I choose where we eat, so it was a golden opportunity for me, but I froze (ironic, given the heat wave) and ended up suggesting a nearby Lebanese place. I've eaten healthily there before, so it's not impossible if you plan carefully and REALLY limit your portions. I ordered chicken breast, hummus, carrot and celery sticks for dipping, and tabbouleh. Sound perfect, right? I didn't really think about all the oil in the hummus and tabbouleh, nor did I think about the impossibility (at least for me) of resisting fresh-based pita bread as a hummus-transporting device. Burp.

Anyway, by the time I added up all the calories when I got home, I was WAAAAAAY over the amount of calories I should ever ingest in one meal at one time. Plus, my stomach REALLY REALLY REALLY hurt. I realized that I had completely forgotten about my alleged focus on conscious choices. If I had been more focused, I would have (1) suggested a restaurant with better options for me, (2) eaten more grilled chicken and less hummus, and (3) skipped the pita bread and doubled my carrot stick/celery order.

The only good thing was that, since I was still completely stuffed at bedtime, I just went ahead and went to bed without dinner, leaving me with a green check for the day.

Today is another day, featuring lunch out with friends who LOVE fried things (danger! danger!) and dinner with a different friend at a "safe" place where I already know what to order. My goal is to remain focused on my goals and on the idea of conscious choice during lunch -- stay tuned!

How much more challenging for you to be eating out yet the joy of socialization with friends so great! I know I would have a difficult time turning down fresh pita bread but working hard to let go of my all-or-nothing thinking so maybe I would resolve ahead to have one and only one delicious piece. Conscious choice to have a healthy breakfast while traveling by car this morning paid off for me big time. I packed an egg, fried in a Teflon pan, in a whole grain tortilla wrap, along with a cut up orange. Turns out my 2 3/4 hour trip took 4 1/2 hours due to mudslide and construction. So glad I didn't "treat" myself like I would have pre-CK to a not so quick stop at a donut shop. I am really benefitting from hearing about your goal of staying focused on goal and making conscious choices.Give yourself credit - and I'll stay tuned!
