Wednesday, Nov 12 2008 - Getting Healthy with my Hubby

I have a competitive edge to me. I wouldn't say I'm super competitive, but on a scale of 1-10, with one being couldn't care less about anyone else and 10 being someone who wants a gold medal in the Olympics, I'm probably about a 5. . . or 6.

Here is my point. My husband and I have been making changes for the past 2 weeks to lose weight. He's lost 14 pounds, I've lost 5 pounds. Working out with my husband has been a very trying thing for me. We have the bodybugg. . . I'm supposed to burn 2750 calories in a 24 hour period, he's supposed to burn 3500. I've reached that target except for 3 days. He has never reached his target. Of course, he gets to eat 2500 calories, which he has gone well below. I'm struggling at 1300. I'm seeing calories as what will fill me up for 100 calories, candy or beans.

It is good to have his support and encouragement. But it is frustrating to see him to less than I am and lose more than I am. I tell myself that men burn more calories because they have more muscle mass. But even with that rationale, he's weight loss is 3x mine.

So my competitive edge tells me to workout more. Instead of 30 minutes on some sort of cardio activity, I'm going to increase it to 45 minutes, along with some weight bearing exercises. Next week, at our weigh in, I'm going to try to lose half as much as he has. I'll never be able to beat him pound per pound, but I think I can beat him for every 2 pounds he loses, I can lose one pound.

Today, I did 31 minutes on the ellipitical trainer, but I'll need another 15 minutes of stair climbing or something. I think I'll walk over to the patient towers at lunch and walk up as many flights as I can. . . there are 28 flights of stairs. . . by the time I stop, I'll probably need some oxygen. I'll need to take it slow. I can climb 12 flights in under 5 minutes, but my HR is in the 170's by the time I get to the top.

I am closer to my goal of losing 7 pounds by Thanksgiving. . . only 3 more pounds to go. This weeks mini goal will be to do half as good as my hubby.

Early weight loss tends to be faster than later weight loss. Men DO tend to have more muscle mass than women. They also tend to be bigger, which means they burn and can consume a lot more calories. We have to be much more stringent on our calories and portions. Most frustrating is that they don't have our hormones, so almost no water weight fluctuations. I think in this instance your competitve edge can really help you. You have set realistic goals. You can make it! The weight lifters often exercise as a male/female team. Aerobically, you should be able to do as well. In weights, he will be able to lift more, but you should be able to build more stamina and endurance. Something to think about.
