Thursday, Apr 22 2010 - Give up the diet drinks
View KERILARNED's food & exercise for this day
Several years ago, I started drinking diet soda. I love the fizz in soda and when I needed to lose weight after college, I switched to diet because there were no calories. After having the twinlets, I have found it extremely difficult to lose weight. After one whole year, I had only lost 10 lbs. Frustrated, I have attempted several times to give up the soda. I love it so much. I never keep it in the house, and I never have...but it I was out and about, I would definitely find a way to purchase a soda. It was my attempt to control the intake...but I would find that when we were eating out, I would have 6 or 7 glasses at one sitting. Can you imagine if I had actually kept it in the house? YIKES!!
One of the reasons I've wanted to give it up was that I noticed after having a diet soda, I would have uncontrollable sweet cravings that would almost put me in binge mode. I couldn't get enough sugar. Well, I thought, this is not a good thing. I'm being counter productive. I might as well have a regular coke instead of diet if after having diet I want to eat 10 candy bars.
I experimented. I started ordering regular coke if I wanted a soda (at 240 cal per 12oz, that's a heavy cost). I found though, that I could have one glass and feel completely satisfied. I had had my bubbles and really, a soda that tasted fantastic. Still weighing the calories, it seemed like I should still drink diet. I told myself I would only have it on Sundays.....I cut back considerably.
But a couple of weeks ago, I gave it up for good. After several attempts at sort of giving it up, I have given it up completely. I haven't had one in about a month.
The results: I have way fewer junk food cravings. I feel like I have more energy. And I really just feel better over all.
I can't say I'll never have another soda, but when I do, it will be one regular soda. No more diet chemical drink.

Way to go! I used to be highly addicted to Mountain Dew. I could drink a two liter bottle a day with no problem. On November 13th, 2008, I gave them up cold turkey along with every other soda and diet soda. I thought it would be really hard, but honestly it wasn't. Now if I just had that much success with giving up sweet tea. LOL

Many years ago, a fitness teacher told me not to drink diet soda. She said it was better to have a regular one occasionally. I guess she was right!
