Friday, May 14 2010 - Yield and enjoy your food

One of the many terrible habits I have is scarfing down my food. I never really taste it. I'm not sure if it started when I was working long days and was lucky to get a lunch, but its a terrible habit. There are several techniques you can use to help yourself slow down:
1. Putting your fork down between every bite.
2. chewing at least 20 times before taking another bite.
3. Eat blind folded.
But frankly, I forget to put the fork down between bites. I don't like my food being chewed to the point of not needing to swallow. And I have to keep an eye on my kids during meals, so blind folding is not an option for me. But, I did come up with an idea. CHOPSTICKS. Yep, I know it sounds a little ridiculous, but eating with chopsticks only allows you to pick up a small bite of food at a time. I figure not using a fork will force me to take smaller bites. It also makes me more aware of how fast or slow I am eating. Granted, its slowed me down already. Not being able to shovel food in certainly will slow you down. My kids (2 years old) keep asking me "mommy, you eating with chopshicks?" and of course, they are now wanting to try to eat with chopsticks as well. Maybe I'm on to something. LOL
The other thing I've done is to make my dinner meal look like it came from a restaurant. I plate my food in such a way that its way appealing to the eye. They say that you eat first with your eyes, so I figure I'd give it a shot.

All good ideas. I used to have the same problem from being the last person to sit down, first to get up at meals with my family, and having only 30 minutes to eat at work---for YEARS. One of the things I did recently (retired now) was to try to spread out my eating time to 20 minutes - man that was hard. I put a nice table setting down and set out a glass of water. I found if I drank water between each bite I could almost get to 20 minutes. (And get my water in!)
