KRIS319's CalorieKing blog

Thursday, Aug 19 2010 - 42 days and counting . . . huh???

View KRIS319's food & exercise for this day

Well, it's 42 days until my surgery for those of you who are counting. Huh??? Yes, they gave me the wrong surgery date on the phone the other day so now the date is September 30. Whatever. I've been waiting eighteen months for this, what's another seven days. The upside is that now it's an 18 pounds to lose in 42 days challenge. I really believe I can make that happen.

In other news, I think I am changing my habits for good for the first time in my life. I've been overweight since the first grade or so . . . healthy eating and exercise have never been something I can stick to. However. Today my husband was asking me about what foods that I will have to give up after my gastric bypass that I still need to have one last fling with . . . and one of the suggestions he made was ridiculous . . . but the old me would have totally jumped on it. Let me explain . . .

Here in Cleveland (morbid obesity capital of the US . . . seriously, the county we live in was the fattest county in the country recently) we have a restaurant/bar called Melt. You may have seen it on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives on the Food Network or on Man vs. Food. They do grilled cheese like nobody's business. One thing they have is an eating challenge. For the mere price of $22 you can try to eat the Melt Challenge, a triple decker, 3 1/2 pound grilled cheese sandwich with fourteen different kinds of cheese and a generous helping of fries and coleslaw. Now the compulsive overeater and type-A competitor in me has said in the past, "I could TOTALLY do that." I've got a husband and friends who have tried and failed. I think I could try and succeed. But wait! I am working my butt off to lose weight, working out every day and making healthy food choices . . . certainly I am entitled to splurge on some yummy food before I lose that ability?!?!?

This is where the story gets interesting for me. I thought long and hard about the challenge. I calculated the rough calorie total for the meal (around 10,000 kcal if you want to know). I decided tonight that there's NO WAY I'm eating that. Why would anyone? Okay this is crazy talk coming from a 41 year-old woman who's never said no to food. Ever. I really don't want it and I am THRILLED about that. Maybe a giant pizza challenge . . . nah!

This is a crazy journey and I am so happy to be on it.

Namaste

I am so proud of you for making the decision just for today to not eat a 10,000 calorie meal. The sandwich sounds wonderful. Having a dairy allergy, I personally could not have it, but I understand the not being able to say no. You are my hero today for saying no to this one little thing, that could have a tremendous side affect on your excercise and eating habits. :thumbu2:

Kris! Thank goodness you aren't going to try a challenge like that. Prove that you can lose weight to be healthy, instead of proving that you can eat more than the others. Also, several of my wife's friends have had that surgery. After time (and much weight loss) they have been able to eat most of the things that they have always loved. They just eat less of it.

Keep moving, keep moving! :thumbu2:
