The first Brandywine of the season, over one pound of diet-friendly goodness. With a good supply of wonderful homegrown tomatoes I should have no trouble sticking with it for the next few weeks.

My hike this morning was marred by the empty verio nest. A friend sent me an e-mail last night to tell me she found the nest empty Friday afternoon. I wasn't really surprised; it looked like an ill-conceived plan from the get-go. But this morning I swear I heard a healthy little begging call from the grass not far from the nest and I'm betting at least one 'nestling' is still being fed by the adults. I didn't have time to stick around and watch for the adults but maybe I'll do that on Tuesday.
