Monday, Sep 24 2007 - The Indians Clinch
View MARCYINCNY1's food & exercise for this day
The weekend was capped by the Cleveland Indians winning their division yesterday and currently holding the best record in baseball. Whoda thunk it back in April when, for several days, they couldn't play the first game in Cleveland because of snow.
I remember growing up in a near suburb of Cleveland and going to Indians' games. Times were so different then. One of the two major daily newspapers at the time, The Cleveland Press, gave out tickets to grade schoolers who got, I think, at least three 'A's out of four grades in reading, arithmetic, science and social studies for the last grading period. The baseball teams played a lot of day games back then and there were lots of empty seats in the massive old stadium. But what most people can't even comprehend when I tell them now, is that as grade schoolers we used to pile onto municipal buses and go downtown to the games by ourselves and lots of other kids did likewise.
I never did however, like the Indian mascot, the grinning Chief Wahoo and I can't believe they still use it.
I didn't get to the park yesterday so I'm heading over there shortly before I get sidetracked by any of the other chores and errands I have to do today.
