It's a sad thing to have your life revolve around a dying refrigerator fan, really it is. It was running every time I checked it yesterday but then it stopped and wouldn't restart last night just as we were about to eat dinner. We set up an old computer fan while we ate and then found the refrigerator fan working again. My niece asked how I could actually watch the fan so I took a picture which, she will notice, happens to include the new photo of her doing some kind of Coast Guard gig.

Bittersweet

My last trip to the farmers' market before Thanksgiving one of the sellers had some beautiful bunches of bittersweet. My mother always tried to have some around the house in the fall and I knew she would be pleased to have a few branches, which she was, but I never expected to get so much pleasure from it myself.

Waiting for the Next Shoe

As I think I've said before, focusing on diet & exercise has a side benefit I never expected: it gives me a good way to avoid the news.

But while we were in Ohio the sub-prime mortgage crisis was a major topic of conversation. I didn't know until last week that for many years Cleveland was the sub-prime capital of America. "Way to go Ohio."

The Beaver Moon

I read the CK article on holiday weight control and I think they miss a few important points.

The article says that "studies show that more weight is gained immediately after holidays than during them" which I think, from my own experience, is absolutely true but not because of any leftovers. It simply always takes a couple of days for extra calories to show up on my scales and I've seen that pattern demonstrated over and over again.

Once a Year is Enough

Eight adults, two pumpkin pies, one homemade mincemeat pie, a large apple cake and one store-bought apple pie. And it all sat out on a kitchen counter for three days, begging people to have at it. They might as well have put a loaded gun along side it all.

The main meal consisted of a delicious turkey roasted with lots of fresh rosemary slipped under the skin, and various starches including dressing, mashed potatoes, candied yams and some rolls. There was gravy, cranberry-orange 'mush', ...
