Thursday, Dec 27 2007 - Less Damage than Usual
View MARCYINCNY1's food & exercise for this day
No setting Cold Moon this morning; it's heavily overcast and now it's raining. I may not get to the park today.
I'm still trying to assess the past week. I think I've made so many changes in my perspective regarding food & diet that I have to really concentrate to see them objectively but in thinking about how I used to do things compared to how I did things this year, the changes really are significant. I think Drs. Roisen and Oz (the RealAge docs) would be proud.
The bottom line is that I cut out a lot of the excess and controlled portions, mine and everyone else's!
For one thing, I didn't bake a lot of different kinds of cookies this year, I didn't bake any cookies at all. Instead I bought a small plate of 8,9, maybe 10 different kinds of cookies at Biscotti Cafe where they make everything with butter. I didn't make an apple pie for the nephew, I bought two of Biscotti's little pies, one of which Erik ate while he was here and the other went home with him. I used to think I had to make everything myself but now I have other priorities, portion control being a big one.
I didn't serve appetizers an hour or more before dinner when people often drink a second glass of wine. This year we sat down to a salad course (served with one mini brioche) about a half hour after everyone arrived. No soup course, no pasta this year which, of course, used to leave guests with little room for the main meal.
I've always had a 'thing' about serving hot food so I plate everything on heated plates in the kitchen and then bring serving dishes from the oven for seconds. This year everyone started off with a pretty well balanced plate of roast goose with Port sauce and herbed rice and apricot stuffing, unseasoned baked butternut squash and pan roasted Brussels sprouts with two relish plates on the table. I'm pretty sure everyone had seconds of almost everything because I had less in the way of leftovers than ever before. Nice. The only thing I may have been a bit short on was the Brussels sprouts.
In the end, I had time to enjoy the get-togethers more than in the past. I spent less time in the kitchen with less clutter and clean up afterwards. Why would I ever go back to doing things as I did?
