Saturday, Jan 26 2008 - Happy Days are Here Again
View MARCYINCNY1's food & exercise for this day
The Fed rushes to the rescue so the Hedge Fund Boyz can put off the day of reckoning a little longer.
But they're not the only ones dodging bullets this week, so have I.
First there was the case of wine, Chocalán Cabernet Sauvignon to be exact, that I dropped. Actually I was trying to hold it in one arm while I was closing the hatch on the van when it went flying, landing on the driveway asphalt. I held my breath waiting for a pool of wine to emerge but nothing happened. I opened the box and found all the bottles, which just happen to be made of particularly heavy glass, intact. Whew.
Then on Monday I fell at the park but proved dramatically that regular exercise really does reduce one's risk of injury. Actually the thing that may have been hurt the most is a friendship.
Shortly after I began my hike I happened to see a friend with her 9 month-old golden retriever. We talked for a bit and the dog jumped up on me and got mud on my coat as it usually does. Then as I headed off up the hill, the dog, Frank, ran after me dragging his retractable lead behind him. Even though I know full well how dangerous a retractable lead can be with an untrained dog, I stupidly picked it up and when Frank started to run back again, the lead played out to it's end and I went face down. I think I mumbled something about being alright before I started back up the hill hoping I hadn't dislocated my shoulder.
My friend called before I got home and briefly spoke to Jim but didn't say anything to him about my fall. That evening I got an e-mail from her:
"Frank apologizes profusely for sending you sprawling today!
It was great to see you, in spite of that, and I hope you're not in pain! Ciao."
If she hadn't made a joke of it, if she hadn't put the blame on the dog, I would have passed it off but I've been having trouble with the way she handles this dog for months so I figured it was time to say something:
I'm fine, just a little twinge where my arm was nearly pulled out of its socket. But, cara mia, why in the world would I be looking to a poor, dumb animal for an apology? I blame myself for trying to hold on to a retractable lead which I've always considered to be dangerous with dogs who are not well trained.
I added some chit chat about other stuff but I haven't heard anything in a couple of days. I've known her a long time but it's one of those relationships that's never really been tested so it will be interesting to see what happens. I never would have guessed that she would be so indulgent with a dog, so amused by its bad behavior and talking to it a surprising amount of the time she's supposed to be on the phone with me.
I just can't help feeling sorry for the dog; I think it's always sad to see a nice dog so out of control.
Meanwhile it's a red letter diet day of a sort: the first time I've weighed in below 140 on the new scales. It's just 139.8 and it's only one time but it's taken forever so I feel relieved. Of course I finally see it days before head to Ohio when my routine will be thrown off...

Ah ... so many points I on which to comment. First, kudos on your weigh-in.
 Every ounce counts. ~~~ Wow on the wine! What a visual.
:bigeyes3: ~~~ Thank goodness you did not sustain major injury with the dog, although if you still feel "twinges" in a few days you might consider an x-ray. I sprawled face down with right arm outstretched while skiing. I heard a sound and was sore and stiff for weeks. Finally went to a doctor where I learned I had fractured my shoulder. It doesn't sound like your injury is as serious but better to be safe and start any needed therapy ASAP. ~~~ Dogs ... I agree about the retractable lease although they can be used safely if the lock is used too limit lead length .... a black button on mine. Sounds like some obedience training is needed. As for the phone, rude. Your friend is going to have problems if she does not establish herself as the alpha person. Right now, it appears the dog has the upper hand ... er, paw.

ah! how exciting about your weigh-in! i think a good weigh in can make up for so many of life's other little curve- balls.... leave the friend thing and perhaps it will all blow over.

Sorry to read of your spill, hope the shoulder improves. Since my father passed away my mothers dog has pretty much taken over her life. Yes, he's annoying at times but somehow I cannot be too mad at her because they have their own little special relationship that makes the both of them happy together. Of course I would love to have a conversation with her over the phone where he is not in the background barking as loud as he can for yet MORE endless attention. LOL Great job on the weight loss, very motivating on this end.
