Mussels Like Brussels

Wednesday, December 19th 2007

I am so very, very glad I went last night. I haven't had such a splendid evening in a long time.

First I was wearing nicer clothes than I've worn in awhile because, well, now I can and–sad but true–that does make a difference in my attitude when it comes to a lot of social events.

More important we had a nice group of five for dinner and we sat next to the table where another group of friends happened to be celebrating the 70th birthday of one of our local activists, a founding memb...

More Snow

Tuesday, December 18th 2007

I was wrong. The shoveling yesterday was heavier than I'd expected and I could feel it in my shoulders. We got another 3-4 inches of lake effect snow last night so my shoulders aren't getting a day off as I'd hoped. At least this will all make for some fantastic snowshoeing.

Dinner out tonight at L'Adour before the Frank Rich library lecture. I'd like to skip the whole thing but Jim's working ski patrol this evening and I took a pass on dinner last time. I hope I can muster a bi...

Hold On (da,da,da,da), It's Comin' (da,da,da,da)

Sunday, December 16th 2007

All's quiet at the moment, the calm before the storm. The birds are chowin' down like there's no tomorrow. We got a few inches of snow last night and a few inches of sleet this morning so the trick is to figure out when to clear the decks before the winds shift and bring in the real storm.

The oats are cooking and the lamb shanks are thawing. I've already plugged in my season's first cup of Schokenig extra dark chocolate which will be my reward for shoveling the sugar-like stuff t...

Red Sky Warning

Saturday, December 15th 2007

The red sky this morning confirms the weather forecast: a blizzard with 12-24 inches of snow beginning late tonight.

I did all my errands yesterday so I can avoid the craziness today. It's cold this morning, 7º/-14º, so I'm waiting a bit before going to the park.
