The Hunter's Moon

Friday, October 26th 2007

Magnificent moonlight and the first frost last night. I expect the eggplants that were still looking so good yesterday will be a sad sight today.

Yesterday was beautiful weather and I finally got in a good ride on my road bike. I would have gone further but Jim wasn't around as backup and it's been awhile since I repaired a flat. I'd really like to get in at least one more ride now that I realize I'm in much better shape than I'd thought.

Later in the afternoon I went down to the ho...

The Park

Thursday, October 25th 2007

A good outing at the park yesterday after yoga/Pilates in the morning. I don't know why but I was absolutely elated to see the cairn had been rebuilt and I found a small stone to place on top making it eight stones high. I also noticed for the first time another cairn further down the trail made of fewer, larger stones. I'd love to know who's building them but then might take away from their appeal.

"Magic Brownies"

Tuesday, October 23rd 2007

I was hoping to make this a good week of diet & exercise but it looks like rain all day so I won't get to the park or out on a bike. I wish I'd made a bike ride a priority yesterday. Phooey.

I also wish I hadn't backed off on the dieting the past six weeks or so. Now that I've corrected my records to reflect the 8# that my old scales didn't measure I'd really like to lose that much and get below 140. I think I'm gonna need another exercise class of some sort.

Meanwhile my long ...

Autumn Glory

Monday, October 22nd 2007

We'll probably be seeing the peak of the fall color today with rain coming tomorrow. Yesterday was beautiful, not a cloud in the sky, and there were lots of people walking around the lakes at the park.

I'm trying to get a few things done before I head downtown this morning to check in on my uncle and my cousin while my aunt is having surgery to replace a heart valve and, I think, put in a stent or two. They were to drive up from Ithaca early this morning so I expect they'll head home once...

Stocking the Larder

Sunday, October 21st 2007

It's the time of year when I stock the larder, or more accurately, the freezer. My purveyor of grass fed meats, Wendy of Sweet Grass Farm, only has chicken for another month or so and then before winter the last beef cows, pigs and lambs go to the butcher. Except for the poultry, Wendy has meat all year but not all cuts so I try to plan ahead for things like leg of lamb, lamb shanks, pork chops and several of her broilers.

Since Niman Ranch isn't offering pancetta anymore, and since I us...
