Dental Rhymes with Mental

Saturday, October 20th 2007

I had an early dental appointment yesterday. I'd put off my dental issues for the summer but now that we have some dental insurance I have no reason not to get started on the work I need to have done. Still I can't believe how much dental work costs.

Last December, about a week before I reinjured the muscle in my hip, I found out I had to have a big molar taken out after having had it crowned the year before without a root canal. The plan was to then start the implant process but I coul...

Not Good

Thursday, October 18th 2007

One of the things I tackled in the yard yesterday was the last load of dirt that was delivered for filling in over the septic tank. I got about half way through it before I found a piece of root with suspicious-looking red shoots and, damn, enough leaf to clearly identify it as Japanese knotweed.

Bravo! Oscar Pereiro was finally awarded the yellow jersey in the 2006 Tour de [S]Farce[/S] France yesterday.

The cloud cover finally broke a bit yesterday afternoon so I biked into Fayetteville to do a couple of errands. I just signed up at the Clif Bar 2 Mile Challenge. Of course I won't be able to do much bicycling for the next 5 months or so but in the past couple of years I've very rarely used my car for trips 2 miles or less so I figure I'm meeting the challenge in principle year '...

Fagioli

Monday, October 15th 2007

M.F.K. Fisher, in the intro. to the 1951 revision of her 1942 book about how to live during wartime rationing, How to Cook a Wolf, says:

"There are very few men or women, I suspect, who cooked and marketed their way through the past war without losing forever the extravagance of the Twenties. They will forever feel, until their final days on earth, a kind of culinary caution: butter, no matter how unlimited, is a precious substance not lightly to be wasted; meats, too, and eggs, and ...
