They got the branches down and fed through the chipper before noon but then they had to work in the sun to cut down the massive trunks. They took frequent breaks and finished up before 4:00. Another truck came in to pick up the big stuff and got two loads out leaving one more, I think, for this morning. All this on a day when we had the highest temperature of the year and a record for the day, 95º/35º.

No diet blogging this morning. I can't concentrate on anything except the crew that arrived at 7:30 to take down the two old box elders in the back. We've really enjoyed these trees for the past nineteen years and we're going to miss them. And the fairies that a little girl was once convinced lived in the gnarled old trunk of the bigger tree.

A big bump in the temperature today/tomorrow. I can't complain when it's been so much hotter for so many other folks. And the tomatoes love it; the Brandywines seem to have a new lease on life and are setting lots of new fruit which I'm trying to keep pinched back. If we have another late frost like last year we may have tomatoes right along.

Several little things, besides the arch sleeves, have contributed to my weight-loss effort, not the least of which is the fact that Wegman's didn't carry Perry's Bittersweet Sinphony this summer and now it seems P&C has also dropped it earlier than usual. I'll be finishing off the last of what I have this week and that will eliminate my biggest temptation down the stretch.
