I can't believe he actually got an Oscar for this schlock. It was dreadful; we laughed through most of the last two thirds of the movie. The only mystery was why we sat through the whole thing. Just plain awful.

I wish I'd read this by Stephanie Zacharek beforehand because it's spot on, especially the part about John Houston:

Some theorists have said the current epidemic of obesity in the U.S. is at least in part due to the abundance of cheap food. If that's true, will we soon be seeing fewer weight-related health problems? Will we all be finding it a lot easier to finally reduce our food & calorie consumption? Hum?

It's Runnin'

The sap is running and the sugar shacks are sending up plumes of steam.



My sugarman, Max, now in his eighties, makes the best syrup I've ever had, light and thick. I hope he and his wife have made it through the winter and are sugaring again this year.

I've missed the buttermilk waffles in particular this winter but Jim's been making a modest effort to lose weight so I've settled for maple syrup on my oatmeal. Maybe we'll have sourdough buckwheat cakes to commemorate the new c...
