Owls

We spotted two owls at the park yesterday and Genie got some great photos of the long eared owl including this one:



I also saw my first bluebird of the season on the way home.

To further commemorate the changing seasons I polished off the last of the peppermint stick ice cream thank you.

We caught a late matinee of "The Bank Job" (we both liked it a lot) and then had Middle Eastern fare at King David's. I'd already blow the day's calories with the ice cream so I ...

Melons

One of my last seed orders included two types of melons: Charantais (above) and Noir des Carmes:



I haven't grown any cucurbits here other than some gourds on the garden fence, but it doesn't seem likely that I'll ever plant fruit trees in the area I left open behind the garden so that's where I'm going to plant the melons and several varieties of winter squash this year. I would be delighted just to harvest a couple of each of these melons.

Christmas Roses in March

I've been surveying the yard. Still some snow in the corners but the Hellebores, Christmas and Lenten roses, are ready to take off as soon as it warms up a bit. Soon they'll look like this, I hope before Easter.



Jim was in the western part of the state looking at 'his' willows so I had the entire day to houseclean and with lots of sunshine, even a chance to move stuff up to the attic. I'm moving very slowly this morning....

Panera

Monday, March 10th 2008

What's with Panera? I went to their website to print out some of the nutritional info and discovered there are big differences between their numbers and those in the CK database and not just in the size of the items. I've found discrepancies between CK and package labeling before but this includes a significant number of items with big variations. I wonder if Panera has actually made an effort to reduce calorie content along with portion size...
