Phooey

Tuesday, January 26th 2010

My first Zumba class was canceled this morning. I was really looking forward to it and hoping it would kick my metabolism up a notch. Not that it still won't; I signed up for a second class on Fridays.

I'm also not happy about not having much in the way of canned tomatoes left in the cellar, last year being The Summer of Slugs and Blight. Yesterday I used some commercially canned tomatoes in a pot of spaghetti sauce in the hope that our exposure to BPA is otherwise low.

I hope this sum...

Can We Program Ourselves To Be Fat?

Wednesday, January 20th 2010

Eating lots of cheeseburgers, fries, and sugary snacks makes people gain weight—but not, new research shows, just because these foods are so high in calories. January Thaw

Friday, January 15th 2010

I guess I'm in a holding pattern of shorts. My motivation just hasn't been the same since I reached my goal for Thanksgiving and now I'm coasting until the Zumba classes start the end of the month. Frankly I'm just not spending a lot of time thinking about losing weight at the moment. The routines I've reestablished over the past few months have become rote and I guess that's real goal.

Americans enjoy one of the most luxurious lifestyles on Earth:
Our food is plentiful.
Our work is automated.
Our leisure is effortless.
And it's killing us.

And so many of us don't see it. Last week I had another horrible experience with a friend who's continuing to gain weight despite all the medical risks that in her case are particularly high. Her denial is so profound that it frightens me. I may make one more effort to talk to her. I'm so uncomfortable being around he...

NOW It's Winter

Monday, January 4th 2010

The next few months are typically my downfall.

As is usually the case, I didn’t gain weight during the holidays. I ate reasonable portions of pretty much anything I wanted but I made sure whatever I ate was worth every calorie. The ricotta cake was definitely worth the calories.

But now we go into the dead of winter here. Everything including my metabolism seems to slow down and even though I know they’re getting longer, the days seem terribly short. I pretty much just want to hiber...
