Valentine's Day

Tuesday, February 16th 2010

It wasn't really about Valentine's Day – it was about being offered a place to stay for a weekend in NYC – so we ended up spending the holiday seeing some very un-Valentine productions: another Arthur Miller play and "Carmen" at the Met.

I have mixed feelings about big-name film actors being used to drum up business for Broadway but there wasn't anything else we really wanted to see. As it turned out it was one of the best things we've seen onstage.

Lindt Creation 70%

Sunday, February 7th 2010

I'd be a lot closer to my goal if it weren't for the chocolate. Usually I eat plain dark chocolate but my nephew brought some Lindt chocolate at Christmas including my first taste of Lindt Creation 70% Cherry & Chili. My first Zumba class was canceled this morning. I was really looking forward to it and hoping it would kick my metabolism up a notch. Not that it still won't; I signed up for a second class on Fridays.

I'm also not happy about not having much in the way of canned tomatoes left in the cellar, last year being The Summer of Slugs and Blight. Yesterday I used some commercially canned tomatoes in a pot of spaghetti sauce in the hope that our exposure to BPA is otherwise low.

I hope this sum...

Can We Program Ourselves To Be Fat?

Wednesday, January 20th 2010

Eating lots of cheeseburgers, fries, and sugary snacks makes people gain weight—but not, new research shows, just because these foods are so high in calories. A high-fat, high-sugar diet, say Washington University scientists, changes the balance of bacteria in the gut, and effectively “programs’’ people’s digestive systems to make them fat. The human intestinal tract has two main types of bacteria that help us digest food: Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes. Research has shown that people—and m...
