View MISSMONZY's food & exercise for this day
Hello Again,
Okay so I actually reached destination number 2 last Saturday but I haven't really sat down and completed my research so I'm considering today my destination-reached day. But for the record it was really last Saturday!! LOL I'll try to be more vigilant about it in the future.
Okay so where in the world am I? Why Benicia, California of course! Never thought I'd be excited to be in Benicia but here I am.
- Benicia was founded in 1847
- Benicia was the sixth site to serve as California's state capital and was the last before Sacramento became capital (which as most of us know is still the capital). Benicia was only the capital for thirteen months from 1853-1854. The capitol building there has been restored and is now part of the Benicia Capitol State Historic Park. (side note - the use of the word "capital" refers to a city and the word "capitol" refers to a building or buildings where state government functions are carried out. That may come up on Jeopardy one day ..)
- In June of 1889 a legendary prize fight was held on a barge off the coast of Benicia. The fight lasted almost 28 rounds (wowww!). I guess they fought until someone was knocked out back then .. I may have to do future research on that one ..
- Benicia is the site of the first known murder by the famed Zodiac Killer
- Benicia has it's own glass beach. I was unable to find much info on the history of Benicia's glass beach but I've heard of the Ft. Bragg, CA one before and I assume it's the same idea. Essentially it was a place at the waters edge where people would dump their trash. After years of exposure to the elements all that is left of the trash is the bits of broken glass which has been effectively polished by the ocean's waves. People now go to these beaches and pick through the glass pieces as one would collect shells on a beach. One man's trash is another man's treasure right here in Benicia
So having made it to Benicia I am now on my way to Fairfield which is an approximate 18 mile walk. Today I've walked two miles so 16 miles to go
Fairfield, keep your eyes open for me!
