View MORTINI's food & exercise for this day
Over the past month or so we've had issues with enough servers at work that it's becoming an issue. While mostly it's just been bad luck, it also has shown that some of the areas that we should be better at - we haven't been so great at. We have a fair amount of systems that are available, and do their jobs without any problems. But, we don't touch them for a really long time, and then something happens, and we discover that backups hadn't been set up correctly, or never set up. So, we sort of got caught up in that, and we have to fix up everything to make sure everything is working properly. So, it was a busy day for me working on some stuff to automate some of the key portions of this for disaster recovery.
Been listening to more of the Chopra lectures. One thing also, is that I don't buy everything anyone's selling, regardless of what it is. Some of it makes sense, some of it doesn't. I think the mind and body have great amounts of power to do things. Consider the placebo affect - and there have been real studies on this - give someone a pill and tell them it fixes something, and chances are good that they'll experience the supposed benefits of the pill. The Doctor that's speaking related this story of one of his patients - he was a neurologist, and this woman had regular, constant migranes. To the point that she would make a trip to the emergency room once a week for them. He'd attended a Chopra lecture, and had heard about Ayurveda balances and how constipation can cause migranes. He decided to ask her if she was constipated or not - and she was. He prescribed some medicine to her to help with that, and her migranes went away. To me, logically, this makes sense. Being constipated, there's some pain and discomfort, but also worrying about it, all of which lead to a headache.
I think a lot of traditional western medicine has been the equivalent of dealing with your body as you would your car. In this example, though, you have a row of nails in your driveway that you drive over every time you enter/exit it. Traditional medicine is to simply fix the tire. Looking at some of the more holistic medicine practices out there are to remove the strip and fix the tire. While I think that these techniques can help with things, they're not a one-size-fit's all type thing. And that's something that Chopra certainly points out - they're to augment traditional medicine and belief structures, not to supersede either of them.
Which, I need to go back to writing and doing meditation in the evenings. I didn't do it on Friday because of the team dinner, and didn't over the weekend, either. I think to be good at meditation, it just takes practice - getting used to refocusing your mind. The goal isn't to stop your mind, but to keep it focused on something - when it starts to stray, bring it back.
I did c25k yesterday (I feel stupid calling it 'a run', because I barely run during the time), and took a nap a few hours later, and felt pretty bad. Not sure why, but after i'm done running, i have a thing going on where it's like bad allergies. When I did c25k previously, I didn't have that going on, just this time. I think it's because I have enough junk in my sinuses from a slight cold that get's going when I start running, but it's enough to not get rid of it. And, yesterday afternoon, i took a nap, which dried it all out.
I'd wanted to make tonight my 'off night', but because I didn't do weights last night, I'm going to do them tonight, instead. My weight yesterday was back to what it was 2 weeks ago, so that means I'm working on loosing weight again. This morning it was only up 1 lb, which is pretty good for me. Usually it's 2-3 lbs on day after weigh-in days. Oddly enough, though, my body fat appears to be up a bit according to my scale. Which, I don't know if I buy, anyways.
There's an episode of The Simpsons where Bart sells his soul to Millhouse. This has unexpected consequences - most notably, he can no longer walk through the automatic door at the quickie mart. This is me and touch-things, like ATM's. There's days I just can't use an ATM, or I stand there for a few minutes pecking at the ATM to get it to register. Since the body fat % part of the scale uses similar aspects of the way that your body deals with electricity, I'm more suspicious of the scale. (Basically, the scale just tries to see how much electricity your body can hold, and by doing so, they can measure how much water you have. and so on)

I completely agree with you on the placebo affect and buying these products people are selling. On the radio a few days ago they were talking about some diet where you drink a shake and lose weight without changing your eating habits or excercising. It was basically another colon cleansing scam.
:n: Who'd you sell your soul to?
