Saturday, Feb 9 2008 - white meat vs. dark meat
View MOUGHI's food & exercise for this day
I went shopping at Whole Foods yesterday and got the nutritional count of the white and dark ground turkey meat. I've interested in this subject ever since I read another CKers blog about ground turkey vs, lean ground beef. I wish I could remember the blogger because it was an interesting blog. Then Denise brought to my attention that the 15% ground turkey in her store had turkey skin in it and it got me to wondering if mine did too. I started to ask around. Yes, the 85% ground turkey does have skin in it according to the WFoods people. Now I will ask my local grocer and see what he says about his own product. I will get back to you on that. In the mean time I will also try and see if anyone knows anything about Jeno turkey meat. I want to know if Jeno in their Lean meat products are skin free and if they separate the dark and light meat of the turkey. I plan on doing research unless someone who reads this already knows that info. Here's the info on the Whole Foods products in the meantime:
Whole Foods White Ground Turkey Meat: 4 oz. serving size raw, 120 cal, 20 cal from fat
total fat=2g, sat.=1g.,chol.70mg.,sod.90g.,cb.=0 pro.24g.

My household eats a lot of ground turkey now days so it is important to find out the fact on this meat. We made the change because of out cholesterol levels. So far getting away from red meat has worked for us. Yes, we still eat red meat, but in very small amounts now and try to go lean except for special occasions. I can't believe it but I even eat turkey hot dogs which I thought I would never do. ( but I rarely eat hot dogs to now since they are on our once every four to six month plan.
Have a nice week end.

Lory,
:heart1:About the hotdogs...you know something I learned from a surgeon....too much bacon, hot dogs and lunch meat will promote cancer cells to mutate...the nitrates are VERY bad for you,so we should all only eat them once in a blue moon.
ANYTHING you hav e to tell me is ALWAYS welcome sweetie....I never once thought you were too strong, just a very concerned friend who AI care about deeply.

Hi Lory! The Jennie-0 packages will say "ground turkey breast" which would be all white meat and thus lighter fat, or "ground turkey pieces" which would include the dark meat and skins. I did not know this either until very recently when they brought it up on the Biggest Loser!
