Thursday, Feb 21 2008 - plateauing mentally

View MOUGHI's food & exercise for this day

We all know what it is to plateau in a diet physically, but how about mentally. I think these past two weeks I have experience just that. I went through the high of changing out my wardrobe for the first time. Then there has been all the wonderful medical results of lowering my weight so far; the lower cholesterol, lower triglycerides, lower blood sugars, smaller feet, less fat around the stomach thus less weight on the back... I could go on and on with all the wonderful thing going on in my body now. Then it hit me, a struggle to stay on my diet along with the hungry bug. I could not believe how hungry I was getting on the same diet that I had been on for months that had not bothered me before. Now it hit me. Am I going through a plateau, or about to go through one? Is my body beginning to protest my new found ability to exercise? I am half way there as far as in the amount of weight I have to lose. I seriously started my diet last May of 07 and have been losing on and off since then, but now my mind is a little pooped. I realized today that I've been through a lot and it's all beginning to sink in that I still have a ways to go.
I really don't like this place that I'm in right now. I don't like this mental plateau that my mind is in. I know I need to get back in the game and get with it.I think that my body has had enough time to get with and start losing again too. So, I devised a plan to get my brain back into the game. I cleaned out every piece of clothing that was too big that didn't fit anymore that I was still wearing. Then I went and bought clothes that were a little tight but would be good for 20 pounds or so usage. I was going to need to wear something anyway. Now, I can be uncomfortable, or I can lose weight and fit into the clothes. Then, I reset my calorie target down 80 calories since I was on the high side to begin with. This way if I go over I won't be getting into maintenance calories but staying withing weight loss calories. So far this is actually working and I'm not getting hungry either. I added more protein to my diet to help with the hunger problem and have looked for better carbs. I also decided to cut back on the decaf coffee and only drink it occasionally since I need more food than I need coffee. ( but I won't give up my Sunday paper and coffee.) I hope these adjustment get me back in the game mentally. I would like to know what other people have done to keep themselves in the game mentally through out their diets. What they did during plateaus and how they over came them.
Well I have more to share since today a lot happened to me, but I'm going to save it for tomorrow's blog since it's getting late. See ya all latter.

It sounds like you have a great plan set and good goals to work for. I know you can do it! You are not in this alone and have this wonderful supportive community to help you along your way. Stick with it...you WILL ride out this plateau, especially with your new goals/plan to help you. :smile1:

Dieting is hard work, especially mentally. You have plan, weigh, measure, make decisions, motivate and it eventually it just gets old. I like to read success stories when I am feeling down. There are magazines that are full of them and there are a lot on the Internet. It seems like after an hour of reading them my attitude improves. Hang in there, you are a success and will keep being one.

I have never handled plateaus well. In fact, I have often relapsed and gained when I hit that point. So, you are a real inspiration to me today, because I know that eventually that time will come for me again and I hope to do something different this time to break on through. I like your closet cleaning idea. I will have to remember that one.

:wave1: First of all, thank you for the congrats message.
I think it's wonderful that you've come up with a plan. I think the most important thing we can do is plan (it helps us to stay focused).
I know EXACTLY what you mean about the mental plateau. Even though we see results and we know that it works, sometimes it just wipes you out mentally. You're not alone, trust me.

What I do that helps me to get over my mental plateau is I set aside 1 day each week to have a "cheat" day. On this day I eat what I want without logging and without beating myself up about the caloric content. By the end of my cheat day, I'm motivated to get back on track the next day. This helps me to not feel deprived.
Some days I've even found on my cheat day that I don't actually go too overboard. (with the exception of yesterday's cheat day) :afraid2:
I think you have a great plan. Just do what works for you. Keep up the great work!:thumbu2:

:hi: I agree we all go through this at one time or another. It is how we handle it that makes us failures or winners. Sounds like you have a plan...winner:y:

I have always called it diet fatique. Yes - everyone goes through it. You have already done my favorite exercise which is cleaning out the closet. I don't have alot of new advice to give other than be kind to yourself mentally and this is one area where I agree with the concept of fake it until you make it.
